Saber Money Secures Strategic Investment
Saber Money, a payments infrastructure provider, has secured a strategic investment from Tether, a prominent stablecoin issuer, as well as from CMCC Global’s Titan Fund. This funding initiative aims to bolster Saber’s operations as it seeks to enhance its cross-border payment services throughout the Asia-Pacific region and the Gulf countries.
Funding Details and Future Plans
While the exact amount of funding and Saber’s valuation were not disclosed, the company plans to utilize these resources to obtain new regulatory licenses, forge banking partnerships, and develop payment solutions aimed at facilitating business transactions in emerging markets.
Infrastructure and Services
The company’s infrastructure enables a wide array of international transfers, catering to financial institutions and fintech firms through the use of stablecoins. Their services encompass remittances, payroll processing, and various business payments, facilitated via application programming interfaces (APIs). Currently, Saber operates under licenses and regulatory approvals across regions including Canada, the EU, India, and Australia. Additionally, Saber’s corporate group operates Mudrex, an exchange for cryptocurrency based in India.
Transaction Growth and Efficiency
Over the past nine months, Saber has reported a significant uptick in transaction volumes, exceeding sixfold growth, with billions of dollars processed across 40+ countries. Impressively, Saber asserts that over 90% of its transactions are completed in less than a minute, although the company did not share specifics regarding transaction size or market breakdown.
CEO’s Vision and Market Potential
CEO Edul Patel emphasized the urgency in meeting the rising demand for international transfers within the Asia-Pacific and Gulf regions, highlighting that the company’s aim is to provide stablecoin-based payment solutions tailored for businesses with overseas suppliers, managing treasury functions, and facilitating cross-border working capital transfers.
Broader Implications of the Investment
The strategic investment from Tether comes amid a broader vision outlined by Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, who noted the immense potential for stablecoin adoption in emerging markets. According to Ardoino, utilizing stablecoins could substantially transform the fee structures associated with international transactions, especially for businesses that typically rely on several intermediaries.
On the other hand, CMCC Global’s Titan Fund recognizes the critical importance of Asia within the global remittance landscape, attributing approximately 53% of worldwide remittance flows to this region. Titan Fund co-founder Shiau Sin Yen projected that, by 2035, cross-border business-to-business payments in stablecoins could soar to $5 trillion.
Investment Trends in Payment Infrastructure
This investment into Saber reflects a larger trend, as other payment infrastructure firms are eager to acquire funding to cater to similar opportunities across the globe. For instance, Fin.com recently raised $20 million to develop stablecoin payment services targeting South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, emphasizing the operational challenges with local currency settlements that many payment providers face.
Saber has not yet made public its plans regarding the specific countries it will target next, nor has it outlined a clear timeline for launching its new business-to-business payment offerings.
