The excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most awaited video games of this generation, has led to yet another fraudulent scheme aimed at cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Cybersecurity researchers at Malwarebytes have identified a counterfeit website purporting to offer a countdown to GTA 6, inviting users to download a leaked version of the game developed by Rockstar Games. This deceptive site is designed to extract funds from users’ cryptocurrency wallets across various blockchain platforms.
Deceptive Practices
The malicious page cleverly combines authentic promotional content about Grand Theft Auto VI with a nefarious payment scheme, misleading visitors into connecting their crypto wallets. Users who fall for this trap by authorizing incorrect transactions might find themselves losing amounts far exceeding the misleading purchase price they see advertised.
Malwarebytes has a track record of uncovering similar scams, including those that claimed to offer early access to the game and fake demo pages. For an air of credibility, the fraudulent site features legitimate information about the upcoming releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, it is important to note that Rockstar has not released any announcements regarding a PC version of the game.
Offers and Inconsistencies
The site presents two offers for an alleged leaked version of GTA 6, one priced at $50 and another asking for 1 SOL, which was valued at approximately $102 during Malwarebytes’s investigation. In a bid to gain the trust of users, the operators caution visitors about other purported leaks being scams, adding a false sense of security.
However, careful examination reveals several inconsistencies. The website’s footer states that it does not facilitate purchases, contradicting its claim of offering a paid download for GTA 6. Additionally, while it describes the game as a console-exclusive, the FAQ section misleadingly mentions a future PC download once payment is made. Mistakes within the promotional content are also apparent, with misspellings and even references to Grand Theft Auto IV instead of the anticipated sixth installment.
Technical Threats
In terms of technicality, Malwarebytes detected two distinct pieces of harmful code within the payment section. One targets Solana wallets and manipulates transactions to leave just enough funds to cover fees, while a more extensive script aims at compromising wallets across multiple chains including Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, masquerading as a legitimate wallet-connection tool but embedded with malicious features.
Ongoing Cybersecurity Challenges
Interestingly, this comes shortly after U.Today reported on a separate incident involving a mysterious figure linked to another string of GTA VI leaks, who recently transferred around $350,000 from a crypto operation known as CYBERLEEK. As of now, this individual remains anonymous, further highlighting the ongoing challenges related to cybersecurity within the gaming industry.
