Recent Security Breach in Cryptocurrency

A recent security breach has led to the loss of a staggering $25.6 million in cryptocurrency, with blockchain security firm PeckShield reporting the incident on August 13. The assets stolen included varying amounts of popular cryptocurrencies: approximately $6.3 million in aWBTC, $5.1 million in DAI, $4.7 million in WBTC, and $2.6 million in Ethereum (ETH). The unidentified attacker managed to convert these stolen assets into around 20 million DAI and 3,000 ETH, with a combined value of about $5.64 million at the time of the report. Currently, these funds are dispersed across four different wallet addresses, but the victims remain unnamed.

Wider Trend of Crypto Thefts

This incident is part of a wider trend, as outlined by Nominis, which noted that crypto thefts surged in July, amounting to approximately $242 million spread across 28 significant security breaches. Notably, the month was marked by a critical compromise of Coinkite’s Coldcard hardware wallets due to a five-year-old flaw, which resulted in losses exceeding $116 million—nearly half of the total losses for that month. The cumulative effect of the remaining 27 incidents contributed to about $126 million in damages.

Impact on the Crypto Industry

Looking at the bigger picture, Nominis reports that major security breaches have collectively cost the crypto industry about $1.65 billion in losses in the first seven months of 2026 alone. The monthly loss breakdown is sobering: January lost $385 million, February saw $49.3 million disappear, March faced $178.1 million in issues, while April alarmingly reached $606.7 million due to high-profile attacks like Kelp DAO and Drift Protocol.

April was particularly brutal for crypto security, marking the largest cumulative losses in a single month this year, whereas July marked the second worst with its staggering $242 million. The Kelp DAO incident particularly stands out, with losses of around $293 million, closely followed by the Drift Protocol breach at $285 million. Together, these two attacks accounted for an eye-watering 95% of all crypto thefts recorded by Nominis in April 2026.
