Enhancing Financial Transactions Between South Korea and Japan
In a significant move to enhance the efficiency of financial transactions between South Korea and Japan, Shinhan Card, a major player in South Korea’s credit card market, has inked a deal with Japan’s SBI VC Trade and the SBI XDC Network APAC. This partnership aims to explore the application of yen-backed stablecoins for facilitating payments among travelers and streamlining trade settlements.
Details of the Agreement
The agreement, formalized on Tuesday, sets the stage for experiments with various payment channels, including stablecoin-based card transactions and direct wallet-to-wallet payments. As part of the initiative, the companies will also evaluate protocols for combating money laundering and preventing fraudulent activities.
Industry Giants Collaborate
Both Shinhan Card and SBI are giants in their respective sectors; Shinhan is one of South Korea’s largest credit institutions, while SBI is a diversified financial entity in Japan, deeply immersed in banking, brokerage, insurance, and cryptocurrency exchanges.
Travel Patterns and Market Relevance
This fresh collaboration is particularly relevant considering the robust travel patterns between the two nations. Official tourism statistics reveal that over 10 million visits were recorded in the initial eight months of 2026 alone, with South Korea contributing 7.42 million visitors to Japan, marking it as the top country of origin for foreign tourists in the archipelago. Conversely, Japan accounted for 2.7 million arrivals from South Korea, underscoring the mutual travel interest.
Previous Initiatives and Future Prospects
Additionally, this initiative follows Shinhan Card’s announcement in April about completing a proof-of-concept testing phase related to stablecoin transactions and cross-border financial settlements. Notably, SBI VC Trade became Japan’s pioneering electronic payment instrument exchange service provider in March 2025, enabling transactions in USDC.
Integration of Digital Financial Solutions
In related developments, Binance Pay has launched a service allowing visitors to utilize cryptocurrency at PayPay-affiliated merchants across Japan, emphasizing the growing integration of digital financial solutions in the region.
