Soter Insure Secures $23.5 Million in New Investments from Standard Chartered and SBI Group
Standard Chartered and SBI Group invest in Soter Insure's Series B, boosting funding to $23.5 million for digital asset insurance expansion.

Soter Insure Secures Funding for Expansion
On November 5, Soter Insure, a digital asset insurance provider, announced that SC Ventures, the investment branch of Standard Chartered, and Japan's SBI Group have committed to the second close of its Series B funding round. This follows an initial closing announced on July 29, where Galaxy Digital led the investment and other contributors included Coinbase Ventures and Franklin Templeton, with additional investments from Token Bay Capital, a participant since the Series A round.
Funding and Future Plans
To date, Soter has gathered a total of $23.5 million, along with significant amounts of cryptocurrency that include more than 500 bitcoins and 2,000 ethers, collectively valued by the company at approximately AED 86.3 million. While the specifics of each investor's contribution remain undisclosed, the funds from this round are set to enhance Soter's insurance offerings, strengthen their underwriting capabilities, invest in technological advancements, and facilitate expansion into the Asia-Pacific region, leveraging its office in Hong Kong, in addition to existing operations in Europe and the U.S.
Company Overview
Soter's headquarters are in Abu Dhabi, and it operates from several locations including Bermuda, London, New York City, and Dubai. The firm was established with support from incubators Further Ventures and WebN Group. Soter has secured a Class IIGB license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority, which provides the necessary underwriting capacity for its policies. In the United Arab Emirates, the company distributes its products through a collaboration with Dubai Insurance P.S.C., offering coverage in fiat currencies as well as bitcoin and ether.
The Importance of Insurance in Digital Assets
Herve Francois, principal of the Digital Assets Fund at SC Ventures, highlighted the crucial role that insurance plays in the digital asset ecosystem, which is often neglected.
Since 2018, SC Ventures has allocated over $1 billion to more than 30 companies in its portfolio.
Insurance Offerings and Risk Management
Soter's CEO, Henson Orser, reiterated the importance of knowing the financial capacity available for claims. The company can cover losses up to $5 million, or the equivalent in bitcoin or ether, directly from its assets, while larger claims are managed through partnerships with other insurers to distribute risk. The types of insurance offered include protection for directors and officers, crime, professional indemnity, and smart contract failures, paid out in either traditional fiat currencies or cryptocurrencies.
"As banks look to delve deeper into digital assets, the need for risk coverage akin to what they have in traditional finance is paramount, yet still limited today," remarked Orser.
He also clarified that the cryptocurrency Soter has raised is specifically allocated for funding insurance programs in those respective currencies, placed in secure cold-storage accounts managed by regulated custodians, ensuring claims in bitcoin are backed by actual bitcoins.
Market Context and Future Considerations
Recent high-profile thefts in the cryptocurrency space, including the $6.3 billion stolen from Binance on October 29, have underscored the necessity for comprehensive insurance solutions. Orser noted that incidents like these have started to tighten the crime insurance market, although substantial evolution remains necessary.
The $23.5 million valuation mentioned corresponds to recent market prices of cryptocurrencies. This figure remains fluid as it changes alongside the values of bitcoin and ether, while Soter's own valuation persists at AED 86.3 million plus the cryptocurrencies held.
Soter has raised questions about how emerging technologies, such as transactions executed by autonomous AI agents, will be addressed in insurance policies, as the market is yet to establish standardized responses to these evolving risks. With the second close indicating further fundraising may follow, attention now turns to the finalization of this funding round and how much insurance capacity Soter will be able to secure to handle potential losses. Standard Chartered is also notably widening its own presence in the UAE's cryptocurrency market during this period.
