U.S. Sanctions Against Iran: Cryptocurrency Confiscation

In a significant escalation of its sanctions regime against Iran, the U.S. Treasury Department is preparing to confiscate approximately $1 billion in cryptocurrency connected to the Iranian economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated during the Newsmax NPolicy Summit on Thursday that this seizure would be executed within the week as a direct response to the ongoing military tensions involving Iran, which have heightened since February of this year.

Targeted Crypto Assets

Bessent emphasized that the targeted crypto assets are known to authorities and efforts are being made to freeze them.

“We know where it is, and we are isolating them,”

he stated in an interview with Greta Van Susteren, reinforcing a commitment to economically isolate Iran through rigorous measures.

Regulatory Efforts and Broader Strategy

Earlier regulatory efforts by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had already identified cryptocurrency exchanges that facilitate funding to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. In August, the OFAC announced its strategy to intensify economic sanctions, widening the scope beyond traditional fiat currencies to encompass digital assets, which are increasingly used in illicit financial activities.

Previous Interceptions and Compliance Actions

In an earlier statement from April, Bessent revealed that U.S. authorities had successfully intercepted up to $500 million in cryptocurrency associated with Iran. Additionally, the stablecoin issuer Tether disclosed in September that it had suspended transactions worth $550 million in USDT due to compliance with U.S. sanctions, which included a notable freeze of $344 million in April alone. These moves reflect a broader strategy to apply financial pressure on Iran’s governmental and military resources by targeting both conventional and crypto assets.
