Commitment to Privacy in Blockchain
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, recently reaffirmed his commitment to preserving privacy within the blockchain ecosystem, emphasizing its importance as a foundational principle of cryptocurrency. In a statement shared on X, he declared,
“It’s only dead if you give up. I’m not giving up on privacy. I’m doubling down.”
This assertion comes as Ethereum increases its focus on privacy-related features, including more secure transaction methods and enhanced wallet protections.
Sanctuary Technologies and CROPS Principles
Since March, Buterin has been advocating for Ethereum’s role in what he calls “sanctuary technologies”—a vision for creating an open-source platform that allows individuals to conduct transactions and communicate freely, without fear of government surveillance. Central to his perspective are the themes of privacy and individual autonomy, which he believes should underpin the technology.
During previous discussions, Buterin outlined four non-negotiable attributes for Ethereum: censorship resistance, security, open-source development, and privacy—collectively referred to as the “CROPS” principles. Most notably, on May 20 of this year, he detailed strategies to establish “native privacy” within Ethereum, pointing to innovations such as account abstraction and access-layer interactions. He urged the Ethereum Foundation to prioritize efforts toward maintaining the platform’s resistance to censorship while enhancing its privacy and security features.
Evolution of Privacy Measures
In August, citing a comparison between Ethereum’s development blueprint—known as “Strawmap”—and his more expansive roadmap for 2023, Buterin highlighted a major evolution: a shift towards prioritizing strong privacy measures. Current public blockchain frameworks, while transparent, expose a user’s transaction history, contrasting sharply with the enhancement of privacy that Ethereum is striving for, including improvements such as private reads and private writes.
Private reads aim to obscure what a user is viewing from infrastructure providers, whereas private writes tackle the obscurity of transactions themselves. Among the proposals being considered to strengthen this privacy initiative is the introduction of FOCIL, designed to prevent dominant block builders from denying transactions linked to privacy-enhancing protocols. Furthermore, researchers are exploring the viability of creating a shielded pool at the protocol level for both ETH and ERC-20 token transfers.
Advocacy for User Autonomy
Buterin has also passionately discussed privacy in various forums, including a notable interview for Bankless in August 2025, where he echoed sentiments from the cypherpunk movement, stating,
“Privacy is freedom.”
His ongoing advocacy reflects not only a commitment to technical advancements in Ethereum but also a broader vision for user autonomy in the digital age.
