Absa’s Historic Move in Bitcoin Custody Services

Absa has made history as the inaugural bank in Africa to facilitate Bitcoin custody services, according to a report by Bloomberg on October 2. Based in Johannesburg, the financial institution is now catering to the needs of various institutional clients in South Africa, including asset managers and non-bank financial firms. This innovation marks a significant milestone in the continent’s banking sector.

Key Insights from Absa’s Digital Assets Division

Rob Downes, who oversees digital assets at Absa’s Corporate and Investment Banking division, emphasized that Bitcoin currently represents the majority of the digital assets safeguarded through this new service.

“Bitcoin is the predominant asset in custody,”

he stated, highlighting the high demand for the cryptocurrency among their clients.

In addition to Bitcoin, Downes indicated that Absa is collaborating with clients on incorporating other cryptocurrencies into their custody offerings. The bank is not only targeting its existing clientele but is also looking to expand its services to diverse institutional groups within South Africa, with aspirations of extending to other African nations, dependent on regulatory approvals.

Security and Governance in Custody Services

Absa’s custody service provides strict controls over digital assets, transactions, and internal authorization processes. The bank’s offering focuses on securing the private keys necessary for approving blockchain transactions, ensuring that its governance and compliance framework is incorporated into the service.

Back on September 21, Absa launched its commercial custody platform, powered by technology from Ripple. This development followed a significant partnership announcement in October 2025, which made Absa Ripple’s first major custody partner on the African continent.

Robyn Lawson, the head of digital product for custody at Absa CIB, explained the integration of Ripple’s software and the bank’s internal systems. Security measures, governance protocols, recovery options, and authorization controls all play critical roles in its design. To mitigate the risk of losing keys—a major concern for institutional investors—Absa employs secure hardware environments to protect keys and authorizations. Notably, the system generates private keys only when necessary, minimizing risks associated with long-term storage.

Growth of Cryptocurrency in South Africa

This push into digital asset custody comes at a time when South Africa sees notable growth in the cryptocurrency sector. According to Chainalysis, South Africa secured the second position in Sub-Saharan Africa for crypto value received from July 2024 to June 2025, amassing around $36 billion. The country benefits from a robust regulatory landscape that encourages institutional engagement, leading to larger transactions often driven by sophisticated trading strategies.

Global Context of Cryptocurrency Custody

Internationally, the concept of cryptocurrency custody is not new. For example, BNY Mellon launched its U.S. digital asset custody service in October 2022, allowing selected clients to manage Bitcoin and Ether. Recent U.S. banking regulations permit national banks to engage in crypto custody and related activities with fewer barriers. On the European front, Deutsche Bank is also gearing up for an institutional crypto custody service set to roll out in late 2026, further highlighting the growing acceptance of digital assets among traditional financial entities.
