Horrifying Break-In Incident
A horrifying incident unfolded in December when a couple became victims of a break-in, which led to the theft of a substantial amount in cryptocurrency. The attack, which took place in their home in Solihull, southeast of Birmingham, has raised alarming concerns regarding the spate of violent crimes against cryptocurrency holders.
Details of the Attack
The husband, referred to as James, and his pregnant spouse were subjected to life-threatening threats from armed intruders who demanded access to their digital assets.
In an interview with the BBC, James described the chilling moments when the criminals invaded their home.
“I saw a door being forcibly opened and noticed gloved hands of masked men entering,”
he recounted. During a desperate attempt to protect his family, he was brutally assaulted with hammers, while his wife was pinned down and threatened with suffocation using a pillow.
“I heard her scream, ‘I can’t breathe,'”
said James, detailing the harrowing scene.
Demands for Cryptocurrency
As the attack escalated, the intruders specifically instructed James to reveal his phone. Unbeknownst to him, an additional assailant was guiding the operation remotely, checking for any cryptocurrency wallets via a video call.
“I could hear him demanding to see everything on my phone, checking which apps were present,”
he explained. Ultimately, the robbers identified a crypto wallet containing a significant sum, compelling James to comply under dire threats.
The criminals issued horrific threats, claiming they would attack his wife and unborn child if he failed to transfer the cryptocurrency immediately.
“They said: if you don’t send us this money now, we’re going to stab your wife in the stomach and kill your baby,”
James recalled. Following the terrifying ordeal, he handed over hundreds of thousands of pounds in digital currency, only to learn that the physical attackers were only allowed to take a fraction of what was stolen, while the mastermind remained off-site, securing the bulk of the funds.
Rising Trend of Wrench Attacks
This violent episode is part of a troubling trend known as “wrench attacks,” where criminals specifically target individuals believed to possess cryptocurrency. The alarming rise in physical attacks against cryptocurrency holders has even led prominent figures in the industry, such as Binance France President David Prinçay and Ledger co-founder David Balland, to fall victim to similar situations.
The dangers of these incidents were further illustrated in a tragic case last month when Jonathan Meléndez, a member of the Mexican rock band Camilo Séptimo, and his pregnant wife were killed by acquaintances seeking a high-value hardware wallet.
Call for Increased Awareness
As incidents involving attacks on cryptocurrency owners increase, the expected resurgence of a bull market poses additional risks, and many are calling for increased awareness and security measures for those engaged in digital currency transactions.
