B3’s Upcoming Tokenized Securities Trading Platform

B3, the primary stock exchange in Brazil, is gearing up to roll out a platform for tokenized securities trading by the first half of 2027. This innovative approach aims to create a new avenue for trading that enables tokenized stocks to maintain the same fungibility and liquidity as their traditional counterparts.

Infrastructure Development and Regulatory Considerations

Humberto Costa, who oversees product and counter strategy at B3, revealed that the exchange is in the process of developing the necessary infrastructure to integrate this new system with the existing market setup while adhering to current settlement protocols.

“Today’s regulations allow for the tokenization of shares, although certain functionalities still hinge on receiving the appropriate regulatory approvals or potentially new regulations entirely,” Costa noted during a recent event in São Paulo.

The envisioned platform will not utilize blockchain as its main framework; instead, tokens will be linked to existing securities, with the aim of ensuring transactions are settled within two business days.

Trading Hours and Future Plans

The ambitious plan includes facilitating trading on a unified platform that mirrors current trading hours, although Costa pointed out that achieving round-the-clock trading and instant settlements would necessitate extensive regulatory changes. He clarified:

“At this moment, I can only settle transactions in the current environment, which follows a D+2 settlement timeline. I’m not currently authorized to operate a different model.”

Previously, B3 had announced a tentative launch date of late 2026 for this feature, but the timeline has now shifted to early 2027. The exchange is also assessing the inclusion of Brazilian depositary receipts (BDRs) and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) within this new digital infrastructure.

Introduction of B3’s Stablecoin and New Financial Instruments

In addition, Costa mentioned the intent to introduce B3’s own stablecoin, although it remains unclear whether these products will interact upon their initial launch. To advance these initiatives, B3 is seeking authorization from the Central Bank of Brazil to handle and secure digital assets.

In a related development, B3 has also introduced six new “Event Contracts”, which include instruments linked to fluctuations in bitcoin prices, marking a significant step in Brazil’s evolving financial landscape.
