Bitget’s Expansion Plans in Southeast Asia
Bitget, a cryptocurrency exchange, is looking to expand its presence in Southeast Asia by acquiring GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics in Thailand. This strategic move follows a significant security breach that affected its hot and warm wallet systems, resulting in losses of around $388 million.
Details of the Acquisition
According to a statement released by the company and reported by Cointelegraph, the acquisition aims to establish local operations in Thailand, a crucial market in the region’s digital asset landscape.
Bitget plans to execute this acquisition through BTGT Management (Thailand), which the company claims to have an interest in. The transaction was confirmed in a filing by GMO Internet on September 24, with plans for completion by the end of October, pending regulatory approval.
CEO’s Perspective
Gracy Chen, the CEO of Bitget, emphasized the significance of this acquisition for their business strategy, indicating the opportunity to introduce their trading platform to Thai users.
Currently, GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics operates the Z.com EX exchange, which has been recognized by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission as a licensed operator in the country.
Inconsistencies and Challenges
Interestingly, while Bitget aims to penetrate the Thai market through this acquisition, the company has listed Thailand as one of its prohibited jurisdictions in its updated terms of service effective from October 16. This inconsistency could potentially be reconciled through the new acquisition.
The backdrop to this proposed acquisition includes a recent incident where Bitget’s wallet infrastructure was compromised due to an exploit in a third-party product, leading to a temporary suspension of withdrawals, which has since been resumed. On October 17, the exchange further announced a reduction of services for certain users in a move characterized as a “one-off exercise.” These developments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by cryptocurrency platforms in maintaining security and compliance in rapidly evolving markets.
