Cryptocurrency Fraud Case Involving Canadian National
A young man from Canada has been implicated in a significant cryptocurrency fraud that has reportedly defrauded victims of over $13 million. Trenton Richard David Johnston, aged 19, faces serious legal repercussions following allegations that he overstayed his visa in the United States.
Allegations Against Johnston
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida, Johnston is accused of masquerading as a support representative for a well-known search engine and various cryptocurrency platforms. This deception enabled him to gain unauthorized access to his victims’ crypto accounts and wallets while residing in Miami.
Co-Accused and Their Activities
In addition to Johnston, authorities have arrested 28-year-old Brandon Michael Tardibone, who is alleged to have assisted him during his illegal stay in the country and facilitated the laundering of the fraudulent proceeds. Federal prosecutors claim that the two individuals misappropriated more than $1 million from victims, which they allegedly used to fund lavish lifestyles, including expenditures on luxury cars, jewelry, and nightlife.
Legal Consequences
Johnston is facing multiple charges that include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to as much as 20 years in prison for each of these serious charges. Tardibone, on the other hand, has been charged with conspiring to commit money laundering and harboring an undocumented person, with potential prison sentences of up to 20 and 10 years, respectively.
