Cardano Foundation Teams Up with CMTA to Promote Standards for Tokenized Securities
Cardano Foundation joins CMTA to promote standards for tokenized shares, recognizing its CIP-0113 token standard for regulated securities in Switzerland.

Cardano Foundation Joins CMTA
The Cardano Foundation has officially become a member of the Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA) in Switzerland, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing standards in tokenized securities. As announced on October 29, this partnership aims to promote the development of regulations and standards necessary for the operation of tokenized capital markets.
Recognition of CIP-0113 Token Standard
This collaboration follows the October 7 recognition by CMTA of Cardano's recently introduced CIP-0113 token standard, affirming that it is functionally equivalent to CMTA's established CMTAT framework for tokenized shares. This means that companies can leverage Cardano’s technology to convert shares into tokenized assets that comply with the CMTA’s certification standards in Switzerland.
While CMTA’s endorsement signifies technical equivalence, it does not extend to automatic certification for individual issuers or their securities.
The association, which seeks to align efforts of financial, legal, and tech entities in establishing security standards on blockchain networks, welcomed Cardano as its latest member after several weeks of close collaboration.
Certification Process and Requirements
The certification process outlined by CMTA involves stringent requirements where issuers must transparently document their tokenization conditions on-chain. Each share must be represented in whole units, without fractions, and essentials such as the token's name, ticker symbol, and clarity about the Cardano infrastructure version must be provided. These protocols place a clear emphasis on maintaining order in tokenized share issuance.
Launch of CIP-0113 and Its Features
In tandem with its membership, Cardano has launched CIP-0113 officially, which introduces a suite of programmable controls over digital assets on its network. This framework enables crucial functions such as identity validation, transfer restrictions, and the ability to freeze accounts, catering to compliance needs pertinent to regulated financial instruments.
Focus on Equity Issuance
Unlike the certification for tokenized shares, CMTA has stated that it does not cover tokenized debt securities, signaling a focused approach on equity issuance within the blockchain framework. As part of its broadened initiatives, on October 8, Cardano's Veridian company announced that it successfully issued shares aligned with the CIP-0113 standard, marking a significant step as the first known issuer to use this tokenization standard in practice.
Market Competition and Future Goals
Current competition in the market for tokenizing assets includes notable players like Cité Gestion, which obtained CMTA certification in January 2023 for tokenizing its own shares through a separate infrastructure, as well as Stellar, which recently announced a partnership for asset management integration.
As Cardano progresses, it aims to empower issuers with innovative technologies while ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks. In conjunction with these developments, the network continues to enhance its tools for developers, recently announcing a session focused on formal verification of Cardano smart contracts, underscoring its commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in its offerings.
