The Circle Foundation’s Innovative Grant Programs

The Circle Foundation, an initiative backed by Circle Internet Group, has unveiled innovative grant programs in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Food Program (WFP). These programs aim to enhance the efficiency of international aid through the use of regulated stablecoins.

Streamlining Humanitarian Support

The partnership seeks to leverage digital payment technologies to streamline the process of providing humanitarian support. The goal is to minimize costs and delays while boosting financial stability for communities in need, particularly in crisis-affected regions.

“As the demand for humanitarian assistance grows, the resources available are becoming increasingly scarce,” noted Elisabeth Carpenter, Circle’s Chief Strategic Engagement Officer and the founding Chair of the Circle Foundation.

She further emphasized the importance of ensuring that a greater portion of aid funds actually benefits those in need by making the transfer process faster, clearer, and less expensive.

Establishment of the Digital Asset Innovation Pool

As part of this collaboration, a Circle Foundation grant will establish the Digital Asset Innovation Pool under the UNDP. This new mechanism aims to transition UNDP’s country offices from small-scale pilot endeavors to comprehensive program implementation using regulated stablecoins. This initiative builds on existing projects run by the UNDP’s Alternative Finance Lab, which has explored blockchain-based payment solutions in places like Syria, Haiti, Guatemala, and The Gambia.

“Efficiently delivering resources to those in need shouldn’t be the hardest or most costly part of executing a program,” remarked Robert Pasicko, who leads the UNDP Alternative Finance Lab.

He expressed hope that the Digital Asset Innovation Pool would significantly enhance the speed and accessibility of final payments in aid projects.

World Food Program’s Separate Grant Initiative

In a complimentary initiative, the World Food Program USA has been awarded a separate grant to build crucial frameworks that ensure governance, compliance, and proper treasury management for the distribution of digital assets. Over the next three years, WFP plans to conduct trials of stablecoin payment systems in several countries, linking global aid funds seamlessly to local service providers and merchants.

“By embracing digital payments, we can revolutionize the speed and effectiveness of humanitarian assistance,” commented Bernhard Kowatsch, the Director at WFP Global Accelerator and Ventures.

Expanding Collaborations and Future Prospects

These endeavors mark a significant expansion of the Circle Foundation’s collaboration with UN technological initiatives, following its previous contributions to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ Digital Hub of Treasury Solutions, which facilitates cross-border financial transfers for 15 UN agencies.

The backdrop of these efforts comes as Circle continues to engage with institutions in the cryptocurrency space—they recently introduced a new lending service aimed at allowing users to borrow against their USDC holdings, further highlighting the convergence of financial technology and humanitarian aid.
