Coinbase Integrates with Deribit

In a significant development for cryptocurrency trading in the United States, Coinbase has successfully integrated with the derivatives exchange Deribit, paving the way for US institutions to access a wider array of options and perpetual futures. This integration was officially announced by Coinbase on Wednesday and represents a leap forward in providing US customers with a regulated avenue to engage with the global crypto derivatives market, which has traditionally been challenging for them to access due to regulatory barriers.

New Trading Capabilities

Coinbase’s derivatives unit, Coinbase Financial Markets, which is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will serve as the platform through which eligible US clients can tap into the liquidity offered by Deribit. As of October 1, Coinbase has migrated its international exchange balances and positions to Deribit, solidifying the foundations of this new trading capability.

Historical Context and Future Access

Historically, US traders have been limited in their options for engaging with the global crypto derivatives sector, which, according to Coinbase, constitutes approximately 80% of the total trading volume in cryptocurrency. This situation started to transform earlier this year when the CFTC provided guidance that allowed Coinbase Financial Markets to connect US traders with international derivatives offerings.

Starting soon, institutional clients in the US will be able to access Deribit’s options and futures products through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. Previously, accessing these markets often required US traders to rely on offshore entities and maintain complex trading setups. In addition, Coinbase plans to roll out options for non-US retail traders shortly thereafter, with US retail access anticipated by the end of the year.

This evolution marks a notable shift in the landscape of cryptocurrency trading in the US, broadening the possibilities for institutional and retail traders alike.
