Coinbase Pro Reintroduction
At the close of this year, Coinbase intends to reintroduce its Coinbase Pro platform, a move that aligns with the company’s efforts to broaden its cryptocurrency offerings. This revamped service will integrate various trading tools, allowing direct purchases of assets, price-linked contracts, and stocks, although access may differ by region.
According to an announcement made by Coinbase (traded on the Nasdaq as COIN) on October 7, this reimagined Coinbase Pro is part of an overarching strategy called Everything Exchange, designed to consolidate various financial instruments into one cohesive platform.
Target Audience and Enhancements
Coinbase’s initiative targets enthusiastic traders who engage in significant trading volumes and utilize intricate strategies. The firm proclaimed,
“Coinbase Pro will return as the dedicated professional platform within the Everything Exchange by year-end.”
Enhancements planned for the platform include improved order routing speeds, updated execution processes, and advanced trading functionalities.
Transition from Coinbase Pro
This development comes after the prior phase-out of Coinbase Pro, which transitioned into Coinbase Advanced aimed at seasoned investors, with the migration of customers completing in November 2023. The new strategy will merge various asset classes, including futures, where standard futures commit participants to agreed prices and delivery dates.
Expansion of Trading Options
This expansion follows Coinbase’s rollout of U.S. stock trading made available back in February, allowing eligible users to trade stocks and ETFs alongside their cryptocurrency investments. Additionally, through a completed integration with Deribit, a crypto derivatives exchange acquired in May 2025, Coinbase has established the Coinbase Global Exchange, which is aimed at bridging U.S. and international markets.
Notably, Coinbase reported having over $30 billion in bitcoin options open interest as of September 30, alongside a staggering $1 trillion in trading volume last year, which reinforces the platform’s strong presence in the derivatives market.
Hedging Strategies and Institutional Access
Coinbase also highlights that this expansion enables hedging strategies and speculative trading. In this context, crypto derivatives’ values are derived from the underlying assets, where an option allows its purchaser the right—though not the obligation—to buy or sell at a predetermined price before a specified expiration date. Notably, perpetual futures do not have a set expiration.
To cater to institutional needs, the U.S. market access will be facilitated through Coinbase Financial Markets, which is recognized as a registered futures commission merchant. Following a recent advisory from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regarding derivatives, Coinbase is able to post customer crypto assets as margin when collaborating with affiliated foreign brokers.
Onboarding and Collateral Management
In preparation for the upcoming availability of options, Coinbase Prime—a service tailored for institutional clients—has begun onboarding new clients. For those eligible outside of the U.S., the application rollout is anticipated to start in late October, with U.S. retail access being unveiled later in the year, contingent upon meeting eligibility requirements. This service will also integrate custody, financing, and staking solutions, enhancing the user experience.
In terms of collateral management, the new platform structure aims to evaluate offsetting positions collectively, which may lower the collateral required for maintaining active trades. This concept builds upon Coinbase’s previous liquidity integration objectives discussed in June.
Moreover, users approved for spot-margin trading will be allowed to leverage their collateral up to 10 times on major assets and five times on other acceptable assets, with over 15 assets eligible for use as security.
Risk Management and Fee Structure
Despite the potential risks, including the possibility of loss exceeding initial deposits due to borrowing, the U.S. spot-margin access will be limited to participants recognized as Eligible Contract Participants, typically encompassing institutions and financially qualifying individuals. The service is being facilitated through Coinbase affiliates, not Coinbase Financial Markets.
Coinbase has already activated the upgraded order-matching engine and simplified processes for retail onboarding. A revised fee tier structure now commences at a qualifying volume of $10,000, aggregating both spot and futures trading activities for reduced commission rates.
Recently, Coinbase underscored the achievement of record market share as trading in derivatives, stablecoins, and on-chain products continues to gain momentum, tallying an impressive $202 billion in activity.
