Cuomo Advocates for Bipartisan Support in Crypto Legislation
In an important discussion at Token2049, former Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, addressed the crypto sector’s significant support for the Republican Party, urging a more bipartisan approach if they wish to see successful legislation at the federal level. Cuomo contended that the concentrated financial backing the crypto industry has shown towards Republicans has resulted in estrangement from Democratic lawmakers, whose backing is crucial for advancing any regulatory measures such as the proposed CLARITY Act.
Financial Contributions and Political Strategy
Cuomo’s remarks emerged during a panel with OKX CEO Star Xu. He indicated that this strategic investment in Republican initiatives has inadvertently sidelined Democratic representatives, making it necessary for the industry to cultivate a more balanced political strategy. Currently, political action committees focused on cryptocurrency have channeled a staggering $54.3 million towards Republican candidates for the upcoming 2026 elections, in sharp contrast to the $26.2 million directed towards their Democratic counterparts. Furthermore, roughly $23.2 million has been allocated to efforts opposing Democrats, as reported by Tech Influence Watch‘s latest analysis.
“When you heavily invest in the Republican Party, you inevitably risk alienating Democrats,” Cuomo explained.
He emphasized that while forecasts from prediction markets show a 61% likelihood of Democrats securing control of both congressional chambers, a shift in the legislative landscape could pose challenges for crypto initiatives: either a rollback of existing policies or a potential collaboration with the Trump administration to facilitate the enactment of the CLARITY Act.
Democratic Perspectives on Crypto
Cuomo also challenged the misconception that Democrats harbor an anti-crypto stance, suggesting instead that blockchain technology aligns closely with the party’s long-standing mission to enhance access to financial services for marginalized populations. According to him, the empowerment granted by crypto aligns perfectly with the Democratic ethos, which prioritizes social equity and inclusivity.
Bipartisan Support and Legislative Challenges
Bipartisan support for crypto legislation has been noted, although Republicans have displayed a greater unity on significant bills. For instance, during the passage of the CLARITY Act in July 2025, 78 Democrats joined 216 Republicans, though 134 Democrats opposed it. Additionally, 18 Democratic senators endorsed the GENIUS Act, which the Senate passed earlier in June 2025. However, not all was smooth sailing; a procedural vote in September saw all Democratic senators and four Republicans rejecting efforts to advance the CLARITY Act, largely due to concerns surrounding potential conflicts of interest related to Trump’s business dealings in the crypto realm.
Despite the challenges ahead, seven Democratic senators reaffirmed their commitment to the CLARITY Act through a collaborative statement. Meanwhile, the Fairshake PAC has taken steps to promote inclusivity within the crypto space by announcing support for 32 House candidates in the forthcoming midterm elections—19 from the Republican side and 13 from the Democratic side, illustrating a potential shift towards a more cooperative political environment regarding cryptocurrency legislation.
