Ethena Token Faces Significant Decline Amid Binance Security Breach Fallout

Market Overview

On October 30, the value of Ethena's governance token, known as ENA, witnessed a notable decrease of 7.26%, bringing its price down to $0.18653. This decline followed a significant security breach at Binance, where the hacker exploited an Ethereum wallet authorization flaw to redirect funds. Reports indicate that this attack resulted in stolen assets valued at approximately $6.3 billion.

Details of the Breach

According to blockchain analysis firm Lookonchain, the perpetrator liquidated 217.5 million ENA tokens, valued at $33.93 million, converting them into Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies at an average price of around 16 cents per coin. The overall transactions totaled 70,480 ETH, equating to approximately $158.25 million, and included sales of notable tokens such as UNI and PEPE.

Over the past 24 hours, ENA traded within a range of $0.166247 to $0.217081, accumulating a trading volume of $1.38 billion. Despite a bounce back from its lowest point reached during the day, the token has plunged 27.86% over the preceding month.

Trading Activity and Speculation

The aftermath of the breach catalyzed intense trading activity among various altcoins, as the hacker swiftly exchanged the stolen tokens for ETH and other cryptocurrencies, including 7.02 million UNI for $39.63 million and 7.77 trillion PEPE for $31.66 million. Investigators have pointed to North Korean cyber gangs as potential culprits behind the breach, though Binance continues to conduct its probe into the incident.

During the same time frame as ENA's plummet, the overall cryptocurrency market suffered declines, with Bitcoin falling over 3% and a similar decrease in total market capitalization.

Following the sales of ENA tokens, Lookonchain also identified another wallet that transferred 2 million USDC to Hyperliquid with the intention of opening a leveraged position on ENA, amounting to $4.09 million with a threefold leverage. This act showed speculation on rising prices, even though it is not conclusive evidence that the selling pressure has mitigated.

Stablecoin Performance

Interestingly, while ENA faced substantial losses, Ethena’s stablecoin, USDe, displayed more stability during the period. Blockchain analytics from Santiment highlighted that USDe experienced a minor decline of approximately 0.2%, briefly dipping to $0.9974 on October 30. Although USDe’s price dropped slightly below the intended dollar peg, it did not see a comparable reduction in circulating supply, changing by roughly $1.5 million during the chaos, in stark contrast to its average daily supply movement of about $21 million.

Technical Analysis and Future Outlook

In the wake of the attack, the daily chart illustrates lingering weakness for ENA, despite a minor recovery from the $0.1658 level. Technical indicators suggest continued downward pressure, with immediate resistance levels identified at $0.20, then $0.21 to $0.22. Analysts previously noted that a sustained close above $0.22 could potentially lead to further gains towards $0.24 to $0.25. However, if the token fails to break through these resistance levels, it might risk falling towards the midpoint of its descending channel near $0.18.

Moreover, changes in Ethena's tokenomics could further influence ENA’s price. A previous proposal suggested channeling 95% of the net revenues from Ethena’s associated businesses into ENA repurchases once the USDe supply reaches $7.5 billion. As it stands, USDe supply is still below that threshold, which remains unmet since it was around $5 billion at the last check. In October, the agreement with StablecoinX regarding lockup provisions of ENA holdings was updated, although it still requires foundation approval for specific sales actions.
