Ethereum’s Glamsterdam Activation Set for October 6

In a recent update, Ethereum developers have officially set a date for the Glamsterdam activation on the Sepolia testnet, marking it for October 6. However, they have also raised red flags regarding potential vulnerabilities that could emerge during public testing phases, especially concerning malicious actors exploiting the availability of inexpensive test ether (ETH).

Concerns from the All Core Developers Consensus Call

During the All Core Developers Consensus call on September 17, participants reached consensus on the October 6 date after analyzing the results from the recent Glamsterdam development network tests. The development team voiced concerns about the implications of the proposed Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS) model in a public setting, where test ETH lacks significant economic consequences. This model is elaborated in Ethereum Improvement Proposal 7732 (EIP-7732), which aims to decentralize the transaction assembly process by delineating the roles of validators from builders.

Understanding the ePBS Framework

Under the ePBS framework, builders submit competitive bids to prepare transaction payloads. When a proposer selects the highest bid, the corresponding builder is obligated to share the executed transactions. Although this is designed to create transparency and efficiency, it opens up the possibility for exploitation, particularly in a testnet scenario where acquiring test ETH is free or extremely low-cost.

Developer Potuz emphasized the risk, articulating that malicious entities could hypothetically generate numerous builder identities to submit inflated bids and then fail to fulfill their obligations by not sharing the payload. He elaborated, “An individual could easily set up a thousand builder identities, outbid genuine competitors, and simply not provide the promised transaction data.”

He noted that the nature of test networks makes it much easier for such disruptions compared to the main Ethereum network, where economic stakes serve as deterrents against such behavior.

Protective Measures and Future Implications

Developers noted that existing protective measures may fall short in the Sepolia environment. Potuz pointed out that some mechanisms designed to mitigate attacks activate only after a series of payloads have been missed, thereby allowing malicious builders to continue submitting bids repeatedly until they are identified and dealt with.

While the developers did not classify these concerns as confirmed threats against Sepolia, they recognized the likelihood that public testing could unveil these vulnerabilities once more participants engage under the ePBS framework. There was a consensus that more robust defenses were necessary for Sepolia, given that real application and infrastructure scenarios depend heavily on reliable testnets.

Differences Between Sepolia and Hoodi Testnets

The Sepolia testnet is notable for its permissioned validator set, controlled by both client developers and testing teams, whereas the upcoming Hoodi testnet will have an open structure for broader validation participation. This distinction allows the Ethereum development team to maintain better control and address issues more effectively should complications arise during the initial public deployment of Glamsterdam.

Looking Ahead to the Glamsterdam Launch

The timetable for the Glamsterdam launch had previously been uncertain but gained urgency following the completion of Devnet-11’s fork rehearsal. It is important to note that while Devnet-11 served as a structured development trial, excluding hostile environment scenarios, it successfully enhanced the testnet’s block gas limit to support an increased transaction throughput.

As Oct. 6 approaches, discussions center on ensuring that client teams meet the set deadline while adequately preparing for the scrutiny that follows. The earlier the client software is released, the more thorough the review process can be, providing essential insights for potential vulnerabilities.

Looking ahead, while Ethereum’s roadmap outlines the Glamsterdam upgrade for the fourth quarter of 2026, the date for mainnet activation remains undecided. Developers are committed to a phased approach, ensuring that successful testing across various setups is a prerequisite before transitioning to mainnet updates. The anticipated outcomes of the October 6 activation will thus provide critical insight into the preparedness for the broader Ethereum network, which is structured for enhanced scalability and transaction efficiency in line with ePBS and other innovative updates.
