Ethereum Institutional Backs Ethlabs Initiative
In a recent announcement, the non-profit organization known as Ethereum Institutional expressed its backing for Ethlabs’ initiative aimed at shortening Ethereum’s block times. This move comes as more institutional players begin to engage with the Ethereum smart contract network, highlighting a growing demand for increased transaction speeds.
The organization took to social media on Friday to advocate for faster processing times, stating,
“Make Ethereum faster,”
and emphasizing the necessity of reducing block times amid rising on-chain institutional activity.
Support from the DeFi Sector
On the preceding Thursday, Ethlabs released a publication featuring insights from 20 founders within the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, who broadly endorsed the proposal identified as EIP-8198, or “Quick Slots.” This proposal aims to decrease Ethereum’s block times from the current 12 seconds to 10 seconds.
Other blockchain platforms have also recognized the importance of improving transaction speeds. For instance, Zcash token holders recently voted to lower their block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, while Solana has proactively shortened its slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, with plans to eventually halve it to 200 milliseconds, enhancing the network’s efficiency.
Integration and Future Upgrades
EIP-8198 was initially introduced in March and discussed at the Ethereum core developers meeting on August 6, where it was proposed for the forthcoming Hegotá upgrade. Ethlabs has announced efforts to integrate this proposal with Ethereum’s main codebase and to explore any dependencies that may arise from its implementation, aiming to ensure its relevance for the Hegotá upgrade.
Looking ahead, Ethereum developers are expected to initiate the Hegotá upgrade sometime in late 2026, following the implementation of the highly anticipated Glamsterdam upgrade, which is pivotal for enhancing the scalability and stability of the Ethereum mainnet. Meanwhile, discussions and movements within the Ethereum community continue, showcasing a proactive stance towards competition in the evolving blockchain landscape.
