Ethereum’s Glamsterdam Initiative
Ethereum is gearing up for a transformative upgrade with the upcoming Glamsterdam initiative, which will implement significant improvements to its gas limit structure. Researcher Toni Wahrstätter has indicated that the Hoodi testnet will precede the mainnet launch, marking a pivotal stage in this developmental phase.
Gas Limit Enhancements
The Glamsterdam update is set to significantly increase Ethereum’s gas cap from its current 60 million to an impressive 200 million, effectively tripling the capacity for transaction handling within each block. This enhancement is expected to accommodate a larger volume of computations based on their gas requirements, thus optimizing the Ethereum network’s efficiency.
Hoodi Testnet and Future Plans
Currently positioned as the final testnet stage before the rollout to mainnet, Hoodi is poised for a gas limit adjustment scheduled for October 26, 2026, where it will align with Sepolia’s limit. This milestone, set for epoch 132,352, at slot 4,235,264, represents a major step in Ethereum’s strategy to ensure that gas pricing reflects actual execution costs and state growth.
Wahrstätter has also hinted at the potential for further escalation to a 300 million gas limit in the future, though this remains speculative at this stage. Developers are yet to finalize the timeline for Glamsterdam’s mainnet debut, which will be disclosed once client teams reach a consensus.
Upcoming Hegotá Upgrade
As the network approaches the Hoodi phase, preparations for a subsequent upgrade, Hegotá, are already underway. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has characterized Hegotá as possibly the last “traditional” fork of the network, retaining familiar features that would be recognizable to users from the platform’s earlier days in 2015.
Post-Hegotá, Ethereum’s evolution will pivot towards advanced technologies such as recursive STARKs and automated formal verification, which aim to reinforce security and efficiency, ultimately transforming the platform into a cryptographic world computer. Currently, 23 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) are under discussion for Hegotá, with two of the major focuses on new mechanisms called FOCIL and Frame Transactions.
