Changpeng Zhao’s Support for Key Digital Currencies
Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ and the visionary behind the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, recently expressed his support for key digital currencies including XRP, Zcash (ZEC), and Solana (SOL). This endorsement comes amid rising tensions surrounding Solana’s efforts to establish a foothold in China.
Advancement of Blockchain Technology
In a statement shared on social media platform X, CZ articulated his enthusiasm for the global advancement of blockchain technology, regardless of the specific cryptocurrency involved.
“I’m always supportive of any blockchain making progress in any country,”
he asserted. Alongside XRP and ZEC, he included Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), BNB, SOL, and several stablecoins among the assets he believes hold promise.
Solana’s Expansion Efforts
The timing of these comments coincides with Solana’s recent announcement of an office in Shanghai, which included a significant advertising campaign to bolster its presence in the region. Initially, CZ welcomed this development, suggesting that Solana’s visibility in Shanghai might pave the way for other blockchain enterprises to thrive in China. He hinted that such initiatives could indicate a potential easing of the nation’s strict cryptocurrency regulations.
Unexpected Delays and Speculation
However, the situation took an unexpected turn when Solana’s launch event at Shanghai’s Shangri-La Hotel, scheduled for October 16, was abruptly delayed. Reports emerged detailing that attendees encountered law enforcement at the venue. While the event organizers cited logistical challenges for the postponement, Solana Foundation’s President, Lily Liu, later revealed an overwhelming fourfold increase in registrations that surpassed the numbers communicated to local authorities.
This unexpected incident led to speculation on social media that CZ’s earlier remarks could have attracted scrutiny from Chinese regulators. Nevertheless, CZ refuted these theories, emphasizing that the quick removal of Solana’s advertisement from a building — reportedly occurring within ten minutes — could not have been influenced by his comments. He noted that he had only become aware of the advertisement after it had already been displayed for several hours.
