Overview of the Hegotá Upgrade
The upcoming Hegotá upgrade for Ethereum is set to prioritize the implementation of two key proposals, labeled as essential by the Ethereum Foundation. This decision comes after a thorough review of 62 proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) by a collaborative team of around 60 researchers and engineers. Notably, for the first time, the Foundation’s Protocol cluster has taken a unified approach to addressing these proposals, rather than presenting individual perspectives from its various teams.
Key Proposals for Hegotá
The two pivotal EIPs for the Hegotá upgrade are EIP-7805, referred to as FOCIL, and EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions. The inclusion of these proposals will play a critical role in enhancing the network’s resistance to censorship and improving account authentication flexibility.
FOCIL aims to empower users by ensuring that transactions can be legitimately included in the blockchain without depending on centralized block builders, thus fortifying Ethereum against transaction censorship. In parallel, Frame Transactions are designed to bring about native account abstraction and lay the groundwork for future post-quantum authentication capabilities. Together with two other related proposals, these initiatives promise to provide foundational elements for new privacy-focused applications within the Ethereum ecosystem.
Development Timeline and Additional Proposals
The designation of these proposals as “must ship” indicates their centrality to the upgrade’s framework; if there is any risk of not meeting development milestones with either proposal, the Foundation stated that they would alter the timeline for Hegotá’s release accordingly.
In addition to these headliners, the Foundation has categorized 15 other proposals as A-tier, which are expected to be a part of the upgrade unless unforeseen development issues arise. Eight proposals remain potential candidates for inclusion, whereas 28 were ultimately declined. Two additional proposals are currently on hold, awaiting mainnet data from Glamsterdam, the preceding upgrade that aims to enhance scalability and fortify Ethereum’s base infrastructure. Hegotá implementation is projected to start in late 2026, following the outcomes of the Glamsterdam upgrade.
Recent Upgrades and Future Commitments
Ethereum’s most recent significant upgrade, known as Fusaka, was launched on December 3, 2025. It introduced numerous scaling and usability enhancements, notably through its primary feature, PeerDAS, which improves how nodes process data, thus optimizing the Ethereum network for layer-2 solutions.
