Ripple’s Recent Transaction and Market Shift

In a recent transaction, Ripple has transferred approximately 1.36 million RLUSD from the XRP Ledger to the Ethereum blockchain. This move, executed on September 6, involved removing 1,363,615 RLUSD from the XRPL and minting an identical quantity on Ethereum within moments. This suggests a recalibration of supply rather than an addition of new RLUSD into circulation.

Market Dynamics and Ethereum’s Lead

The shift has resulted in a growing lead for Ethereum in the RLUSD market. Current blockchain analytics indicate there is about $1.38 billion worth of RLUSD on Ethereum, compared to $1.03 billion on the XRP Ledger. Consequently, Ethereum’s share of the total circulating RLUSD has risen to approximately 57.3%, creating a substantial margin of nearly $350 million above XRPL.

This swift change is notable considering that in late June, the XRPL had briefly taken the lead, with around $801 million in RLUSD, while Ethereum followed closely with $795 million. The initial dominance of XRPL came as a result of increased adoption. However, by August 21, Ethereum reclaimed the lead at $989.34 million versus XRPL’s $941.36 million, and now the gap has expanded dramatically.

Ripple’s Strategy and RLUSD Availability

It’s crucial to recognize that this shift does not imply that Ripple is forsaking XRPL. The company continues to issue RLUSD across a variety of blockchain platforms. According to their official documentation, RLUSD is available not only on Ethereum and XRPL but also on networks such as Base, Optimism, Unichain, and the XRPL EVM Sidechain.

Ethereum’s ecosystem allows RLUSD to leverage greater access to decentralized finance (DeFi) liquidity, enabling interactions with lending markets and decentralized exchanges such as Aave and Curve, thus fitting into Ripple’s strategy of utilizing both blockchains for liquidity rather than favoring one over the other.

Current Circulation and Transaction Volume

As of September 3, Ripple’s transparency report indicates there are $2.396 billion circulating in RLUSD, alongside $2.518 billion in reserve assets, marking a significant growth since it surpassed the $2 billion threshold not long ago.

Despite the movements, XRPL maintains a significant volume of native RLUSD transactions. On-chain research has shown that RLUSD’s trading volume has increased from under 1% to approximately 12% of total XRPL trading, with XRP continuing to play a critical role in transaction fees and settlement processes on the XRPL. Hence, it is important to clarify that RLUSD operates independently of XRP, positioning RLUSD as Ripple’s stablecoin, while XRP remains a distinct digital asset, with XRPL acting as one of the platforms for RLUSD issuance.
