UK FCA Initiates Consultations for DeFi Compliance
In a significant development for the cryptocurrency sector, the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has initiated two consultation periods aimed at assisting decentralized finance (DeFi) companies in adhering to its regulatory framework. This announcement follows the FCA’s recent call for applications from businesses seeking to operate under a new set of crypto regulations, established to address financial crime and money laundering concerns.
Consultation Focus and Objectives
The FCA’s consultations, disclosed on a Wednesday, focus on delineating how DeFi entities can comply with existing anti-money laundering rules and financial crime regulations, emphasizing that the guidance aims to clarify rather than introduce new policies. The agency’s move comes in light of new legislation affecting crypto asset management, which has prompted discussions on potential exclusions from regulatory oversight for certain crypto assets.
Industry Response
The UK Cryptoasset Business Council responded positively, stating, “DeFi represents some of the most groundbreaking elements within the Financial Services sector. The UK has a chance to create a balanced approach—defining clear regulations while fostering an environment conducive to responsible innovation. It is crucial that the FCA navigates this process effectively.”
Future Regulatory Landscape
Additionally, the FCA outlined its forthcoming regulatory landscape concerning crypto, including rules regarding stablecoin reserves, that will begin taking effect in October 2027. The application process for crypto businesses commenced on September 30, with a compliance deadline set for February 28, 2027, ensuring that firms understand the timelines for aligning with the new regulations.
