Gemini Space Station Earnings Report Overview
In its latest earnings report, Gemini Space Station disclosed a substantial net loss of $107.7 million for the second quarter ending on June 30, marking its fourth consecutive quarter of financial setbacks since its listing on Nasdaq in September 2025. Although the company experienced a significant year-over-year revenue increase of 37%, reaching $45.5 million, it faced a sharp decline in its core spot trading operations. The total trading volume plummeted to $3.8 billion, a steep drop from $11.3 billion recorded during the same period last year.
Financial Performance Comparison
Comparing Q2 2026 with the previous year, the loss improved by 19%, down from $133.2 million in Q2 2025. While Gemini’s operating loss narrowed to $76.9 million—an 18% improvement from the first quarter—operating expenses also saw a 15% reduction sequentially, amounting to $122.4 million. These positive trends in expenses and losses were attributed to workforce reductions implemented in February and the company’s exit from various international markets.
Revenue Breakdown
Despite the overall revenue growth, transaction revenue took a hit, declining by 15% year over year to $17.8 million. Exchange revenues also suffered, decreasing by 38% to $12.5 million, attributed to a downturn in both retail and institutional trading activities. Specifically, retail spot volume dropped by 53% to $700 million, while institutional volume fell a staggering 68% to $3.1 billion.
The company’s revenue boost was propelled by alternative sources: services revenue surged by 149% to $23.5 million. Notably, credit card revenue saw an astonishing 231% increase, totaling $16.2 million. Staking revenue rose by 50% to $4 million, and over-the-counter revenue also experienced growth, reaching $4.7 million as compared to $611,000 a year ago. An earlier report highlighted that Gemini’s increasing reliance on credit card and other non-exchange offerings was becoming apparent.
Transaction-Related Losses
Additionally, Gemini reported $20.1 million in transaction-related losses, significantly up from $3.6 million the previous year. This total included a considerable provision of $16.1 million forecasted for expected credit losses linked to its credit card portfolio. The company noted that around $10 million of this Q2 provision was due to accounts created in the first quarter and involved in identified fraud cases. To combat this, Gemini has implemented enhanced fraud detection measures and account monitoring systems, describing the provision as concentrated among specific accounts without indicating widespread issues in its overall credit portfolio.
Asset and User Metrics
On the asset front, Gemini experienced a 54% decline in platform assets, dropping to $8.4 billion from $18.2 billion year-over-year. This decrease was attributed to falls in crypto asset valuations and some institutional outflows from custody. Monthly active users transacting on the platform increased by 11% to 580,000 compared to last year, although this figure marked a 2% decline from the first quarter.
Future Strategies and Developments
Gemini is actively working to diversify its revenue streams beyond spot trading, as evidenced by the prediction markets generating $524,000 in Q2, with a remarkable 93% rise in event contracts traded. The company also recently introduced commission-free stock trading for eligible customers in the U.S. as part of its strategy to broaden its market appeal.
The foundation for this U.S. expansion includes a regulated derivatives infrastructure, with Gemini Titan recognized by the CFTC as a designated contract market. Furthermore, Gemini Olympus has achieved status as a registered derivatives clearing organization, having gone live on August 4, now enabling the company to settle its own prediction contracts and explore new U.S. derivatives product offerings.
Management and Legal Challenges
Management is set to address the results during an earnings call scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET on August 14. Investors will be keen on updates regarding service growth and its potential to counter sagging spot trading performance, as well as any normalization of credit losses. Additionally, Gemini remains embroiled in an investor class action lawsuit related to its IPO disclosures and strategic business changes, with the case still actively progressing in federal court.
