September’s Unprecedented Cryptocurrency Losses

September turned out to be an unprecedented month in the realm of cryptocurrency, witnessing a staggering total of losses exceeding $766 million due to various security breaches. This figure comes from estimates provided by two prominent blockchain security firms, PeckShield and CertiK, which reported a worrying surge in hacking incidents compared to the previous month.

Major Breaches and Recoveries

PeckShield documented 55 significant breaches that together resulted in approximately $766.5 million being siphoned off, while CertiK reported a larger count of 97 incidents, estimating losses at $768.4 million.

Among the most notable hacks were the alarming $388 million breach of Bitget and the $320 million exploit involving the Liquid Network. Fortunately, reports indicate that over $270 million of the funds stolen from Liquid Network have since been recovered. These incidents represent some of the largest thefts in the cryptocurrency sector this year.

Smaller Breaches and Overall Impact

In addition to the major exploits, smaller breaches also occurred, affecting entities like Safe Wallet, DCENT, and Duelbits, which experienced losses of $7.8 million, $6 million, and $5.9 million, respectively. CertiK’s security dashboard has recorded a total of 656 security incidents in the year 2026, culminating in an alarming total of $2.68 billion in losses across the cryptocurrency industry.

The Need for Enhanced Security

In light of these developments, CertiK emphasized the rapid evolution of security threats in the crypto space, remarking,

“September was a stark reminder of how quickly the threat landscape can shift.”

This month has reaffirmed the need for enhanced security measures within the blockchain ecosystem, given the extensive financial damage inflicted by ongoing cyberattacks.
