Hargreaves Lansdown Launches Crypto ETNs
Hargreaves Lansdown, a major player in the U.K. investment landscape, has officially launched exchange-traded notes (ETNs) linked to bitcoin and ether for select customers. This development marks a significant evolution for the investment platform, particularly as it previously took a cautious stance on whether cryptocurrencies should be classified as assets. The decision to introduce these products comes nearly a year after the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the U.K. reinstated access to retail investors for such crypto securities.
Details of the Crypto ETNs
The firm is now listing a total of nine crypto ETNs from well-known issuers such as Blackrock’s iShares, Wisdomtree, 21Shares, Invesco, Coinshares, and Bitwise, with annual fees varying from 0% to 0.35%. These products can be accessed through Hargreaves Lansdown’s Advanced Investing service, but there are strict restrictions in place. Clients must complete an appropriateness assessment and adhere to a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period before engaging in any trading activities.
Market Context and Investor Awareness
This careful approach reflects the ongoing cautious attitude towards retail cryptocurrency investments in the United Kingdom. Although Hargreaves Lansdown’s entry into the crypto space comes after a notably slow start, it indicates a gradual shift in their perspective. The platform’s Chief Product Officer, Doug Abbott, emphasized that it is crucial for customers to be fully aware of the inherent risks associated with investing in cryptocurrencies, especially bitcoin and ether. He mentioned that demand for crypto ETNs from more experienced investors has been on the rise, prompting the firm’s decision to respond to customer inquiries.
Benefits of Crypto ETNs
For those interested in gaining exposure to cryptocurrencies, ETNs represent a simplified investment avenue. Investors can benefit from fluctuations in bitcoin and ether prices without needing to personally manage digital currencies or interact with cryptocurrency exchanges. This transition is significant for the retail investment community in the U.K., as it brings crypto investment options further into the mainstream.
Trading Volumes and Market Comparison
Following the FCA’s authorizations, trading volumes for crypto ETNs listed in London surged, with 21Shares reporting around $1.5 billion in transactions post-rule adjustment—an impressive increase from previous trading levels. Nevertheless, the U.K. market still lags behind Europe; for instance, August trading volumes were reportedly only one-sixth of those on Germany’s Xetra exchange.
Market Timing and Future Outlook
In terms of timing, it’s worth noting that bitcoin was valued at approximately $125,000 when the FCA lifted restrictions in October 2025, the price dropped to around $58,000 by June, and currently stands near $80,000 as Hargreaves Lansdown enters the digital currency market. The U.K. government is also taking steps to foster payment innovation by assigning the Bank of England a new secondary goal focused on this area. As more platforms start offering crypto products, discerning the right eligibility measures while providing access to investors remains a critical theme in pursuing broader integration into established financial systems.
