Revolut’s Expansion into the U.S. Banking Sector

Revolut is on its way to establishing its American banking presence with a conditional nod from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for its plan to create a national bank in the U.S. Set to launch in the early months of 2027, the proposed institution, known as Revolut Bank US, N.A., aims to enhance its service offerings, which include a capital infusion of $95 million and a stablecoin initiative, contingent on receiving further necessary regulatory approvals.

Milestones and Future Plans

On September 3, the financial technology firm announced that it had successfully passed a significant milestone in its pursuit of a national bank charter, which was initiated back in March. However, this conditional approval does not equate to immediate operational readiness; Revolut must fulfill the OCC’s stipulated conditions, secure deposit insurance from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and obtain clearance from the Federal Reserve prior to commencing operations.

Planned headquarters for the new bank is in Stamford, Connecticut, and Revolut anticipates it will create roughly 160 jobs in the area.

“We appreciate the OCC’s ongoing dialogue during our application process,”

stated Cetin Duransoy, CEO of Revolut U.S., affirming that the decision positions the fintech firm for its anticipated launch in 2027.

Service Offerings and Market Strategy

Revolut’s founder and group CEO, Nik Storonsky, highlighted the significance of this approval as a fundamental step toward providing a comprehensive range of financial services in the United States. With a global customer base that exceeds 80 million, Revolut envisions that its operational strategy in the U.S. will cater especially to users managing multiple currencies from across various regions, including Europe and Latin America. Instead of establishing physical branches, the company plans to utilize existing ATM networks to serve its clientele.

Currently, Revolut functions in the U.S. through its partnership with Lead Bank, an FDIC member, and the acquisition of a national charter would empower it to offer a full suite of banking services directly rather than relying on a third-party provider. Future offerings from Revolut Bank US are expected to include checking accounts, credit products, installment loans, and currency exchange services, along with the stablecoin initiative aimed at enhancing its digital financial product range.

Importantly, the FDIC insurance would exclusively cover qualifying deposits, and would not extend to cryptocurrencies or stablecoins without appropriate FDIC approval. Furthermore, while Revolut has plans for a stablecoin as part of its banking model, this proposal will adhere to specific federal regulations, including the GENIUS Act, enacted in July 2025, which delineates the legal framework for stablecoin issuance in the U.S.

Global Expansion and Future Prospects

To extend its reach beyond the immediate launch, Revolut had previously indicated that it would look to introduce multicurrency deposits, investment accounts, stock, and cryptocurrency trading options. In spite of these plans, mortgages are not included in the company’s initial three-year rollout strategy following the bank’s opening.

Internationally, Revolut has been actively strengthening its banking and payment licenses across various regions. It secured banking licenses in the United Kingdom, Australia, and France in 2026, furthering its footprint alongside an existing license in Lithuania. In August, the company announced the establishment of its French banking operations, which will facilitate regulated deposits and lending initially for French customers before expanding to other Western European locales. Revolut is also eyeing opportunities in several South American and African markets while navigating the European Union’s burgeoning crypto regulatory terrain.

As Revolut moves toward establishing its national bank in the United States, the firm is simultaneously working on its stablecoin strategy in Europe, with the EURR euro-pegged token already in distribution in select European markets. With the goal of providing a complete range of banking services backed by regulated, fiat-compliant products, Revolut is positioning itself as a significant contender in both traditional and digital banking within the global financial landscape.
