Hyperliquid Strategies Applies for FCM License; Posts Impressive $620.6M Profit in Q3
Hyperliquid Strategies applies for FCM registration while reporting a $620.6M profit in Q3, driven by gains in its HYPE token holdings.

Hyperliquid Strategies Inc. Overview
Hyperliquid Strategies Inc. (NASDAQ: PURR) is in the process of establishing a regulated futures commission merchant (FCM) business in the United States. They recently reported a robust net income of $620.6 million for the third quarter ending September 30. This substantial profit was largely influenced by their escalating holdings in the HYPE token, which has seen significant appreciation.
FCM Registration and Business Model
As part of their plan to enter the futures market, a subsidiary of Hyperliquid submitted its application for FCM registration on November 5, 2023. The proposed FCM would cater to U.S. clients engaging in perpetual futures trading on select markets utilizing Hyperliquid's proprietary blockchain infrastructure, pending regulatory approval.
CEO David Schamis indicated that the company made strategic investments totaling $802 million this quarter, aimed at acquiring HYPE tokens and repurchasing shares, positioning the firm to leverage its blockchain capabilities more effectively.
Hyperliquid's intended FCM would support independent market operators creating their own trading platforms under the proposed HIP-3 framework, which emphasizes the use of blockchain for market operations. This new business model is designed to handle customer accounts while adhering to regulatory standards, although Hyperliquid has advised that authorization for specific perpetual futures markets is not guaranteed upon FCM approval.
Financial Performance
In addition to its new business pursuits, Hyperliquid Strategies experienced substantial financial gains from its HYPE token investments, with $803 million in unrealized gains contributing to the reported quarterly net income. It is important to note that these gains stem from the appreciation of tokens held, rather than from actual sales of HYPE tokens.
For the quarter, the company faced a $172.3 million provision for income taxes and incurred $15.3 million in operational costs associated with its equity facility. Additionally, it generated $12.3 million in revenue from staking and validator commissions and earned $1 million in interest. Expenses related to selling, general, and administrative endeavors, as well as research and development, totaled $7.6 million.
Assets and Investments
As of September 30, Hyperliquid Strategies declared total assets amounting to $3.76 billion, which included $3.51 billion in HYPE tokens, each valued at $90.99. The firm reported $254.6 million in cash-like instruments and an impressive stockholders' equity of $3.40 billion, with no reported debt.
The latest quarter also saw Hyperliquid raise $911 million via its equity facility, while investing $802 million in both token and stock buybacks. This included a major acquisition of approximately 9.1 million HYPE tokens for $785 million, resulting in a total of 38.5 million HYPE tokens held by the end of September, a significant increase from the 29.3 million tokens held in June.
Recent Developments
By October 28, Hyperliquid's holdings had further increased to around 38.9 million HYPE tokens, a cumulative investment of $1.58 billion for roughly 25.9 million tokens at an average price of $61.13. By that date, they had spent about $27.9 million repurchasing 5.8 million of their own shares, with total equity capital raised amounting to $1.58 billion and remaining cash holdings at $245.3 million.
Hyperliquid Strategies has evolved to become one of the largest publicly traded entities focusing on the HYPE token, providing equity investors a unique route to gain exposure through its shares listed on Nasdaq. Recently, it was reported that the Duquesne Family Office, led by famed investor Stanley Druckenmiller, had made a $23 million investment in PURR, further highlighting the firm's growing prominence.
Market Performance
As indicated by market data, HYPE was trading around $77 at the time of this report, down over 7% in just the past day, demonstrating the volatility that comes with cryptocurrency investments.
