Universal Expands USDU Stablecoin to Solana

Universal has unveiled plans to broaden the availability of its USDU stablecoin—backed by U.S. dollars—to the Solana blockchain, enhancing its operational reach within the UAE-regulated framework. This strategic move enables eligible users to engage in dollar-based transactions on the Solana platform, which is advantageous for digital asset settlements and treasury management activities.

Strategic Advantages and Institutional Access

In making this announcement, Universal highlighted that the USDU could potentially reshape financial operations and on-chain activities. It’s noteworthy that access to USDU on Solana will primarily be reserved for professional and institutional players operating in both the UAE and select global markets. This access will be facilitated through Aquanow, Universal’s international distributor, leveraging its infrastructure to connect eligible users with the stablecoin.

Universal emphasized the advantages of integrating USDU with Solana, citing its rapid transaction speeds, cost-effectiveness, and consistent operational capabilities as compelling reasons for this expansion. Juha Viitala, the senior executive officer at Universal, remarked that this development significantly enhances the institutional landscape for accessing regulated digital dollars. He stated,

“The expansion of USDU onto Solana introduces regulated, USD-backed liquidity into a highly dynamic environment for on-chain financial transactions.”

Collaboration with Aquanow

Moreover, the collaboration with Aquanow is expected to enhance USDU’s accessibility across various digital wallets, platforms, and financial services that support Solana. Aquanow operates through Aquanow ME FZE in the UAE, which is recognized by Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority. This means that it is equipped to handle a range of services, including broker-dealing and investment management, in a regulated environment.

USDU’s Unique Position in Digital Finance

As the pioneering dollar-backed stablecoin registered as a Foreign Payment Token with the Central Bank of the UAE, USDU is positioned uniquely within the digital finance landscape. Its registration structure provides a legal framework for its use in digital asset transactions within the UAE, specifically for trading digital assets and derivatives, while explicitly excluding standard domestic payment scenarios.

Additionally, Universal Digital Intl Limited, functioning under the Financial Services Regulatory Authority in the Abu Dhabi Global Market, is limited to issuing a Fiat-Referenced Token available exclusively to professional clients. Universal ensures the stability of USDU by maintaining a one-to-one dollar reserve for each issued token and provides monthly independent attestations to verify these reserves.

Previous Developments and Future Prospects

The relationship between USDU and dirham-based settlements has already been established, with an earlier partnership promoting smooth stablecoin conversions involving both USDU and the dirham-linked AE Coin. This strategic infrastructure is crafted for managing liquidity, providing treasury services, and facilitating cross-border transactions, with more potential integrations anticipated in the future.

Before this latest development involving Solana, Bitcoin.com had previously signaled intentions to incorporate support for USDU within its self-custodial wallets, allowing for user control over their tokens while adhering to local regulatory standards. This would have included operational features like receiving and sending USDU as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain.

Furthermore, a separate U.S.-based service from Ramp emerged in July, focusing on facilitating overseas payments using stablecoins. However, it utilizes USDC and USDT, not USDU, catering instead to more than 140 countries for vendor payments, showcasing the competitive landscape for stablecoin usage.

In another development, Western Union and Rain collaborated to introduce the Stablecard wallet, which utilizes the USDPT stablecoin, further demonstrating the growing interest in stablecoin solutions across diverse global markets. Such advancements suggest a notable shift in how financial institutions and consumers are increasingly leveraging digital currencies for transactional purposes.
