Leadership Changes in the Polish Olympic Committee

The Polish Olympic Committee (PKOl) has seen significant leadership changes following the recent arrest of its president, Radoslaw Piesiewicz, who faces serious corruption charges linked to the downfall of a cryptocurrency platform. On September 14, Marian Kmita was appointed as the acting president to fill the vacancy until April, when Piesiewicz’s term officially ends.

Corruption Allegations and Investigations

This transition comes in light of Piesiewicz’s detainment for allegedly accepting kickbacks from the now-defunct exchange Zondacrypto, with which he had previously facilitated a major sponsorship deal for the committee.

Rumblings of discontent within the committee had been growing for several months, culminating in agitation from a faction of 15 members who publicly criticized the arrangements made with Zondacrypto shortly after the agreement was finalized last year. The Polish authorities launched an investigation into the sponsorship deals in April, which instigated a wave of demands from various sports governing bodies for Piesiewicz to resign.

Extravagant Gifts and Financial Implications

Allegations have emerged that Przemysław Kral, the former CEO of Zondacrypto, bestowed extravagant gifts upon Piesiewicz, which included a luxury watch priced at over $46,000. These gifts purportedly led Piesiewicz to exert his influence with Poland’s consumer protection agency, UOKiK, on behalf of Zondacrypto.

The investigation has also suggested that the exchange operated like a Ponzi scheme, with connections to organized crime, nationalist opposition factions, and potential associations with Russian intelligence. Estimates from the government indicate that the company’s collapse has caused losses nearing $94 million, impacting about 30,000 individuals.

Future Actions by the Acting President

In light of these developments, Kmita has acknowledged the troubling financial position of the Polish Olympic Committee and announced plans to initiate an urgent audit to evaluate the full scale of the financial repercussions stemming from this crisis.
