Warning Against Multisignature Wallets
In a recent statement, Charles Guillemet, the Chief Technology Officer of Ledger, cautioned Bitcoin users against hastily adopting multisignature (multisig) wallets following the recent Coldcard incident. He warned that overcomplicating wallet setups could inadvertently heighten security risks rather than lessen them. Guillemet suggests that individuals utilizing self-custody for their Bitcoin should consider the simpler yet effective alternative of Miniscript, which allows for advanced security protocols without overwhelming complexity.
Drawbacks of Multisig Wallets
On a platform known as X, Guillemet highlighted the potential drawbacks of multisig wallets, including the complexities they introduce in terms of management and recovery. Many users find themselves in positions where they cannot efficiently recover their funds due to poorly configured multisig setups.
Recommendation of Bitcoin Miniscript
As a solution, Guillemet recommended Bitcoin Miniscript, a program that enables users to establish detailed spending criteria, such as rules for inheritance, time-locked keys, and 2-of-3 signing conditions. He noted that Ledger’s implementation of this technology supports “clear signing,” providing users the assurance that they can see and verify every transaction path on their hardware wallets before approval.
Benefits of Miniscript and MuSig2
Furthermore, Guillemet mentioned that leveraging Miniscript can simplify the development of tailored wallet applications. He shared his own experience where, with the assistance of an AI tool named Claude, he was able to devise a functional Bitcoin wallet that incorporated complex spending policies within a matter of hours. The clarity provided by Ledger’s signing method made him confident in testing this wallet on the main Bitcoin network.
He also introduced another concept known as MuSig2, a cryptographic method that serves as a more advanced alternative to conventional script-based multisig setups. According to Guillemet, Ledger’s hardware wallets are unique in their support for MuSig2, which may offer additional benefits for users.
Conclusion on Security Measures
While emphasizing these innovative alternatives, Guillemet acknowledged that multisig setups could still be beneficial for certain users. He stressed, however, that security measures should be aligned with an individual’s specific risk profile instead of merely responding to sensational news. For most users, he concluded, a well-maintained single-signature hardware wallet is typically the most sensible option.
