Meritz Securities and Ripple Partnership

Meritz Securities has forged a strategic alliance with Ripple, aiming to introduce institutional digital asset custody and tokenization systems into South Korea’s capital markets. The partnership, officially signed on October 1 at Meritz’s headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, has executives from both companies, including Meritz CEO Jang Won-jae and Ripple President Monica Long, raising expectations for future developments in the industry.

Agreement Details

As part of the agreement, Meritz will assess Ripple Custody alongside Ripple’s tokenization capabilities, evaluating how they can be integrated within South Korea’s existing regulatory framework for securities and digital assets. The announcement came on October 7, as Meritz embarks on an analysis of various digital asset initiatives in anticipation of forthcoming regulatory reforms in the country. Possible areas of exploration include spot crypto ETFs, fractional investments, tokenized securities, digital trading platforms, and the introduction of won-denominated stablecoins.

Collaboration Scope

Initially, Meritz and Ripple’s collaboration is restricted to activities permitted under current laws, with an eye on expanding their cooperation as South Korea gradually adapts its regulations surrounding digital assets. Central to this partnership is Ripple’s technology for institutional custody and tokenization, which will be explored for its applicability within the Korean capital market.

Ripple Custody Overview

Ripple Custody is designed to assist institutions in managing and storing digital assets, combining these services with tokenization to offer a comprehensive solution for banks and other financial institutions. This segment of Ripple’s business is gaining traction throughout the Asia-Pacific region, as seen in a recent deal with SettleMint. This partnership merges Ripple Custody with tools for the issuance and management of tokenized assets, specifically for regulated entities in the area.

Future Prospects

The collaboration showcases a systematic approach where institutions can utilize Ripple’s infrastructure to manage all aspects of a tokenized asset’s lifecycle seamlessly without relying on disparate systems for different functions. Moreover, Ripple has previously implemented its custody technology directly, as demonstrated by a project involving South African financial institution Absa Corporate and Investment Banking, which initiated digital asset custody services powered by Ripple in September.

At this time, Meritz has not disclosed any specific products or timelines related to this new partnership. Their preliminary focus involves analyzing how Ripple’s offerings can align with existing South Korean regulations. The agreement builds upon Ripple’s preliminary engagements with Korean financial entities, notably a venture with Kyobo Life Insurance that aimed to test the settlement of tokenized government bonds using Ripple Custody.

Regulatory Landscape and Market Activity

While the regulatory landscape for digital assets in South Korea is set to evolve—especially as security token amendments take effect in February 2027—Meritz is already widening its horizon with plans for digital asset ETFs, fractional investment schemes, and security token offerings. The partnership with Ripple plays a crucial role in these preparations, though Meritz has yet to make definitive commitments to any particular services.

As interest in stablecoins surges within South Korea’s financial realm, Meritz will be closely monitoring regulatory developments concerning locally denominated digital currencies. Ripple has established a presence in this market through its RLUSD stablecoin, which was integrated into Upbit’s trading options against the won, Bitcoin, and USDT in July, facilitating deposits via the XRP Ledger. Although the cities mention both XRP and RLUSD, Meritz has not declared whether these will be integral to future products stemming from the Ripple partnership.

Strategic Positioning

In anticipation of South Korea’s evolving digital asset regulations, Meritz is strategically positioning itself to integrate new services within its capital market operations. A company representative articulated how this partnership combines Ripple’s extensive digital asset infrastructure with Meritz’s capabilities within capital markets, paving the way for a phased introduction of robust financial services aligned with incoming regulations. Launched in 2012, Ripple delivers blockchain-based financial solutions across more than 90 countries, covering custody, payments, tokenization, and stablecoin functionalities for the global financial sector.

XRP Market Activity

Meanwhile, XRP’s market activity showed minimal immediate shifts following the announcement of the Meritz partnership, trading around $1.47 on October 7 after a period of decline. Technical indicators remain ambiguous, suggesting a potentially bullish trend, with the next significant resistance point located near $1.48, potentially opening pathways to $1.53 with a breakthrough. However, the specifics of XRP’s involvement in any forthcoming initiatives stemming from the collaboration remain undetermined.
