Metaplanet Expands Cryptocurrency Investment in Asia

In a significant step to expand its cryptocurrency investment footprint throughout Asia, Metaplanet has received approval for a fully-owned subsidiary based in Hong Kong, which will be dedicated to managing Bitcoin-related investments. This new entity, named Metaplanet Asset Management Asia Limited, is set to be incorporated in September 2026 with an initial capital investment of $1 million, according to a company disclosure made on September 11.

Purpose and Operations of the New Subsidiary

The purpose of Metaplanet Asset Management Asia is to facilitate trading during Asian market hours while U.S. markets are closed. It aims to effectively manage both client investments and the company’s own capital, covering a diverse portfolio that includes Bitcoin, equities, credit products, and preferred securities, among other liquid assets. Oversight for the subsidiary will be provided by directors Simon Gerovich, Darren Winia, and Kelvin Lee.

Labeling this new venture as an integral part of Project Nova, Metaplanet’s broader initiative to create financial services centered around Bitcoin, the subsidiary will focus on trading operations, risk management, and position monitoring in alignment with the group’s existing infrastructure. This dual-faceted approach allows the Hong Kong arm to execute transaction operations and investment management tasks, ensuring cohesive global investment strategies across Asia, the U.S., and Europe.

Collaboration with Existing Operations

The Hong Kong subsidiary will work in concert with Metaplanet’s existing Miami operation, set up in March 2026 as the central hub for institutional investments. While the Miami office will orchestrate strategy and overall investment management, the new Hong Kong unit is tasked with the real-time execution of trades and monitoring markets throughout the Asian trading session.

Recent Acquisitions and Future Plans

In its recent activities, Metaplanet has also made headlines with plans to acquire the Japanese brokerage firm Siiibo Securities, citing a purchase price of 2.1 billion yen. This acquisition, finalized in July 2026 and subsequently rebranding to Metaplanet Securities, positions the company to offer licensed investment products within Japan.

Furthermore, Metaplanet is currently exploring Bitcoin-backed digital credit products in collaboration with JPYC and Progmat, with a variety of potential structures under review, including security tokens and digital corporate bonds. However, no official launch or product specifications have yet been announced, pending regulatory considerations and internal reviews.

Additionally, Metaplanet has intentions to facilitate transactions involving 2,100 BTC and a $2.5 million investment into the Nasdaq-listed entity, Super League Enterprises, aiming for a majority stake and influencing its direction under a new identity as Superplanet.

Financial Impact and Regulatory Considerations

The establishment of the Hong Kong subsidiary is anticipated to exert minimal influence on Metaplanet’s consolidated fiscal results for the financial year ending December 31, 2026, according to company forecasts. While the venture reflects ongoing growth and strategic expansions in both Asian and U.S. markets, the specifics about when client services will commence, or the hiring of additional staff, remain unclear.

Furthermore, the announcement did not confirm whether the subsidiary would operate under a local regulatory license or opt for exemptions, highlighting a critical area for clarification as Metaplanet continues to develop its global investment services in cryptocurrencies.
