Legal Action Against Capstone

In a significant legal action, U.S. prosecutors have confiscated approximately $84 million linked to a Montana-based payments company named Capstone, which is reportedly associated with Tether, a major player in the cryptocurrency sphere. This civil forfeiture initiative has emerged from allegations that Capstone masqueraded as a technology firm to establish bank accounts, thereby facilitating transactions for various cryptocurrency entities.

Allegations and Seizures

Court documents indicate that Capstone, based in Montana, conducted payment processing for at least two cryptocurrency companies through a banking institution situated in Dominica. Furthermore, it is claimed that Capstone engaged in fraudulent activities by allegedly impersonating FBI agents to convert ill-gotten gains into cryptocurrency.

The breakdown of the seized assets includes around $81 million from accounts held by Capstone at Wells Fargo and nearly $2 million from its JPMorgan Chase account. Additionally, approximately $1.2 million worth of Tether, a cryptocurrency pegged to the U.S. dollar, has also been seized, as reported in filings from July by The Information.

Tether’s Response

Tether has provided a statement clarifying its role, indicating that while it was a client of the Dominica-based bank, its holdings there were limited and it had no prior knowledge of the activities attributed to Capstone. Importantly, the Justice Department’s filings do not implicate Tether or any other involved companies in any illegal activities. Representatives from Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase have refrained from commenting on the matter.

Capstone’s Defense

Capstone’s legal representative has affirmed the firm’s intention to dispute the allegations, asserting their innocence in this case, which has drawn attention to the intricate relationship between traditional banking institutions and the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency transactions.
