World Liberty Financial’s Expansion Plans

World Liberty Financial (WLFI) is positioning itself to enable payments using its USD1 stablecoin across significant online retail platforms, a move highlighted during a panel at the Token2049 conference in Singapore this Wednesday. Company CEO Zach Witkoff and co-founder Zak Folkman discussed their plans during a session dedicated to stablecoins and were joined on stage by Bam Azizi, the co-founder and CEO of the payment service provider Mesh.

Collaboration with Mesh

During the panel, Azizi disclosed that Mesh had formed a collaboration with WLFI, aimed at allowing users of USD1 to utilize their digital currency throughout Mesh’s extensive network of merchant partners. The anticipated launch for this integration is slated for this quarter. Folkman elaborated, stating,

“In addition to integrating with our World Liberty application, we’re also working to extend this technology to some of the largest businesses operating in the Web2 market space.”

Backing and Market Capitalization

WLFI is backed by high-profile figures, including the family of former US President Donald Trump. The USD1 stablecoin, which aims to maintain a consistent value of $1, is managed by BitGo, with its reserves consisting of cash and US government money market funds. Currently, the market capitalization of USD1 is reported to be around $4.45 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Regulatory Developments

Additionally, WLFI made headlines in August when it received conditional approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to create a national trust bank that will handle the issuance of dollar-linked stablecoins and the custody of digital assets. This development is set to shift the responsibility of USD1 issuance from BitGo to WLFI itself, according to Witkoff’s statements. He noted,

“While we are currently issuing through BitGo, this new trust charter will enable us to independently manage that aspect.”

Political Scrutiny

However, this charter approval has attracted scrutiny, particularly from Senator Elizabeth Warren. She has raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest arising from the Trump family’s involvement with WLFI and has proposed the Ending Presidential Corruption in Banking Act in response. In defense of their operations, Witkoff characterized the approval as a success achieved against considerable criticism from media outlets and political figures alike, stating,

“We’ve managed to accomplish this in spite of the attacks on us.”
