Qivalis Secures EMI Authorization

Qivalis, a financial consortium based in Amsterdam, recently announced that it has secured Electronic Money Institution (EMI) authorization from De Nederlandsche Bank, the central bank of the Netherlands. This significant regulatory approval positions them for the introduction of a euro-denominated stablecoin aimed at enhancing the European digital currency landscape.

Regulatory Framework and Future Plans

In a statement shared on Wednesday, Qivalis highlighted that obtaining this EMI license means they will be subject to continuous oversight by the Dutch central bank. This regulatory framework enables them to issue electronic money tokens that are backed by euros, thereby fulfilling essential criteria of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).

The company is poised to start the issuance of its stablecoin in the upcoming months, contingent on meeting further MiCA stipulations and finalizing their white paper. Qivalis seeks to carve out a niche in a market predominantly controlled by US dollar-backed stablecoins, such as Tether, which commands a market capitalization of approximately $183 billion, representing more than 60% of the entire stablecoin sector valued at $303 billion.

CEO’s Vision and Strategic Expansion

CEO Jan-Oliver Sell expressed the necessity for Europe to have its own euro-backed settlement asset that adheres to European legal frameworks and regulatory standards.

To bolster its position, Qivalis has expanded its network by incorporating 25 additional banks across 15 countries recently, bringing the total number of participating institutions to 37. This strategic move reflects the consortium’s ambition to advance the adoption of a euro-based digital currency in a rapidly evolving financial ecosystem.
