Surge in Cryptocurrency Ownership

Stuart Alderoty, the Chief Legal Officer of Ripple, has pointed to significant findings from the National Crypto Association’s 2026 State of Crypto Holders Report, highlighting that cryptocurrency ownership has surged to include 67 million individuals across the United States. This statistic positions these investors as a formidable demographic of “everyday Americans” whose influence should not be underestimated by policymakers.

Legislative Efforts: The CLARITY Act

Alderoty’s remarks come ahead of the anticipated markup of the CLARITY Act, a pivotal legislative effort aimed at establishing clear regulatory frameworks for digital assets. California currently leads the nation with approximately 9.5 million cryptocurrency holders, followed by Texas with around 5.94 million and Florida at 4.71 million. Even states with the fewest participants boast numbers nearing 99,000.

Support from Industry Leaders

Recently, Mike Novogratz, the CEO of Galaxy, emphasized the essential role of cryptocurrency innovation within the U.S., cautioning Democrats against yielding to the resistance from anti-crypto factions. Ripple’s leadership has actively supported the CLARITY Act, advocating for its passage as a crucial advance for both the cryptocurrency sector and the broader American populace.

Regulatory Discussions and Criticism

Alderoty has expressed his support for the bill’s movement, suggesting that the upcoming markup represents a significant development in the regulatory discussions surrounding cryptocurrencies in the country. Both Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and Alderoty have articulated that a clear regulatory environment is preferable to uncertainty, although some voices in the crypto community, such as Input Output CEO Charles Hoskinson, have criticized the bill, arguing that it requires substantial revision before approval.

Following numerous amendments, the future of this legislation remains uncertain, caught in a delicate balance as it progresses through the legislative process.
