Robinhood Launches Cryptocurrency Trading in the UK
Robinhood has announced the launch of cryptocurrency trading for eligible users in the UK, providing access to over 50 digital currencies through a partnership with Bitstamp, integrated within its investing app. This significant move allows UK customers to trade popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and HYPE as part of the company’s broader offerings, which also include stocks, shares ISAs, options, and futures.
Regulatory Approval and Fees
According to a report by Bloomberg, the rollout begins this week, following regulatory approval which saw Robinhood’s UK subsidiary registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as a cryptoasset firm on July 31. This registration is crucial for Robinhood to operate in compliance with the UK’s anti-money laundering regulations, which require crypto businesses to register and adhere to specific guidelines before offering their services.
Customers using Robinhood’s platform will benefit from no trading, custody, or account maintenance fees. Instead, they will incur a 0.1% foreign exchange fee when converting currencies, which may rise to 0.3% during weekend transactions. The trades for cryptocurrencies will be facilitated by Bitstamp UK Ltd., a noted crypto exchange acquired by Robinhood for $200 million in the previous year, aiding the company’s pursuit of international expansion in the digital asset landscape.
Market Insights and Future Regulations
Robinhood’s president for the UK division, Jordan Sinclair, highlighted the significance of this launch, underscoring a growing interest in digital cryptocurrencies among a new wave of UK investors. The company aims to establish itself as a comprehensive investment platform in the UK by integrating this new crypto service into its existing offerings.
As Robinhood enters the UK market, it does so ahead of impending regulatory changes for the country’s crypto sector, with a new authorization framework set to take effect in October 2027. Companies will soon be able to apply under this framework until February 2027, and those wishing to continue offering crypto services after this transition will need to comply with the new requirements. Notably, despite the registration with FCA, cryptocurrencies held through Bitstamp UK are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Innovations and Financial Performance
In addition to the crypto trading service, Robinhood is introducing its Cortex Digests feature to UK customers, a generative AI tool that analyzes market news and data to help investors interpret the price movements of digital assets. This innovation is integrated into the same app that users rely on for various investment products, further enhancing Robinhood’s capabilities.
The development of Robinhood’s own blockchain, known as Robinhood Chain, reflects the company’s commitment to advancing in the crypto space. Launched on July 1, the Layer 2 network has reportedly seen more than $18 billion in decentralized exchange trading volume and over $840 million in total value locked, allowing developers globally, including those in the UK, to create applications on its platform.
Recent financial results indicate a dip in Robinhood’s crypto transaction revenue during the second quarter, which declined by 38% year-on-year to $100 million. Despite this, other areas of the business showed resilience, with total net revenue climbing 32% year-on-year to $1.31 billion, driven by growth in areas such as prediction markets.
As Robinhood prepares to launch its second publicly traded venture fund, potentially raising up to $200 million, it aims to support earlier-stage businesses instead of the established companies targeted by its initial fund. This second fund is expected to provide retail investors with more direct access to startups connected to Y Combinator, offering new opportunities as it enters a more expansive investment phase while continually evolving its cryptocurrency offerings.
