Call for Dashjr’s Ouster from Bitcoin BIP Editorial Team Amidst Controversy

Controversy Over BIP Editor’s Role

Mark “Murch” Erhardt, a Bitcoin BIP editor, has called for the expulsion of fellow editor Luke Dashjr from the editorial team, following contentious disputes surrounding Dashjr’s management of BIP110 and a recent complication during the chain’s split. On August 9, Murch voiced his concerns by lodging a request on the Bitcoin Development Mailing List and creating GitHub pull request 2248 to propose Dashjr’s removal.

Response and Current Status

Just under an hour after Murch’s post, Dashjr responded by denying the allegations. As of August 10, the request to remove him remains under consideration while Dashjr still holds his position among six other editors listed in the current BIP3 document. No action has yet been taken to formally remove him.

Claims and Counterclaims

Murch’s objections center on claims that Dashjr inconsistently wielded his editorial powers while actively participating in the development of BIP110. He highlighted scenarios in which Dashjr allegedly attempted to publicly assign a BIP number before discussing it on the mailing list, as well as his quick merging of a related pull request shortly after it was opened. In addition, Murch pointed out that Dashjr’s contributions to editor discussions plummeted to below 1% after new editors joined the team in April 2024.

He took to social media to announce his recommendation for Dashjr’s removal, sharing the motion for broader visibility. The editorial guidelines specified in BIP3 stipulate that any proposal must be introduced and drafted within the Bitcoin Development Mailing List before it is formally submitted, allowing editors to ensure prior discussions occurred before assigning a BIP number and approving merges. The guidelines frame the editor’s role as administrative, clarifying that they do not dictate which proposals may gain traction.

Murch further posited a breakdown in communication between Dashjr and the other editors, framing the situation as a clash between Dashjr’s editorial role and his advocacy for BIP110. However, Dashjr countered these claims vehemently, calling the accusations false and asserting that he has adhered to all procedural norms. Additionally, he suggested that Murch should be the one to resign as editor due to his behavior.

Support and Community Reactions

Support for Murch’s push to dismiss Dashjr emerged from other Bitcoin contributors, including developer Matt Corallo and BIP Editor Olaoluwa Osuntokun, who officially backed Murch’s motion. Osuntokun emphasized that his support stemmed from a concern over adherence to editorial practices, rather than a critique of Dashjr for supporting an unpopular proposal.

Impact of BIP110’s Signaling

This ongoing dispute was ignited by the entrance of BIP110 into mandatory signaling at block 961,632 on August 8, where only a paltry 2.53% of the preceding blocks demonstrated support. The situation has led to the emergence of nodes that produced a minority branch, further complicating matters in the Bitcoin network.

Calls for Governance Framework

Amid the contention, Jameson Lopp pointed out the lack of a formal governance framework for managing the BIP Editors, suggesting a need for clearer guidelines to help resolve the ongoing dispute. Meanwhile, Antoine Riard advocated for Dashjr to step aside for a moment, allowing time for community feedback and the development of new procedures.

Ongoing Issues in the Bitcoin Community

Currently, the Bitcoin community grapples with two central issues: the future status of BIP110 and the fate of Luke Dashjr’s editorial responsibilities. GitHub pull request 2248 remains active, deliberating Dashjr’s removal, while another pull request seeks to change BIP110’s designation from Complete to Closed, following the disruption in its deployment. The discussions surrounding these matters remain unresolved with no set deadline for conclusions as the community awaits clarity on both proposals, reflecting the ongoing debates in Bitcoin’s evolving landscape.
