Introduction to SoFi Earn
In an innovative move within the banking sector, SoFi Technologies has unveiled a new financial product called SoFi Earn (SOFIE), which features an interest-bearing tokenized deposit with a competitive annual percentage yield (APY) of 4.40%. This offering is part of SoFi Bank, a federally chartered institution ensuring federal deposit insurance for consumers.
Features of SOFIE Tokens
As per their recent announcement on October 22, the SOFIE tokens allow customers to generate interest on their digitally represented deposits, which can later be converted into SoFiUSD—a stablecoin used for various cryptocurrency transactions and transfers on blockchain networks.
Representing $1 held at SoFi Bank, N.A., SOFIE is positioned as the inaugural tokenized bank deposit from a U.S. bank that operates under national regulations, setting it apart from traditional stablecoins. SoFi’s customers can easily manage their SOFIE holdings via their SoFi Crypto accounts, where they can enjoy the advertised interest rate while remaining flexible to convert the funds as needed.
Interest Rate and Insurance
Notably, this variable interest rate is subject to change, with SoFi identifying October 20 as the starting date for the current APY. There are no minimum balance requirements for the SOFIE product, although any fees associated with the account may impact earnings. Deposits linked to SOFIE enjoy FDIC insurance, providing up to $250,000 in coverage per depositor, per insured bank; however, this protection does not extend to cryptocurrency acquired after converting the deposit.
Gradual Rollout and Functionality
The rollout of SoFi Earn is planned to unfold gradually over the coming weeks, with customers already eligible for cryptocurrency services able to access it through November. The design of SoFi’s product revolves around two types of digital currency: SOFIE functions as an interest-earning deposit while SoFiUSD acts as a dollar-pegged stablecoin for digital transactions.
For instance, if a customer has $5,000 earmarked for future crypto purchases, that amount would accrue interest in the form of SOFIE until the user decides to convert it to SoFiUSD for trading purposes. Maintaining the 4.40% APY rate, this would generate approximately $220 in interest over one year—before fees, contingent on the actual rate and duration of the deposit.
CEO’s Insights and Market Position
Anthony Noto, SoFi’s CEO, emphasized the importance of this offering for customers who want their funds to remain productive while they gear up for transactions involving digital assets. He reinforced the distinction between SOFIE and payment stablecoins, clarifying that SOFIE is categorized explicitly as a deposit liability, not a payment stablecoin—a critical differentiation under U.S. banking regulations.
Future Developments
Amidst a growing interest in how blockchain technology can enhance traditional banking, SoFi’s launch of SOFIE comes on the heels of several advancements in its digital asset operations, including the integration of cryptocurrency trading features in late 2025 and the introduction of SoFiUSD for blockchain-based payment settlements. Last month, reports highlighted SoFi’s partnership with Mastercard, allowing blockchain transactions to be executed seamlessly within their existing card infrastructure.
In total, the company serves a significant 15.8 million members across its financial platform, facilitating over 134 million global accounts through its tech solutions.
