South Korea Strengthens Cybersecurity Measures in Wake of Financial Sector Breaches
South Korea plans a cybersecurity overhaul for financial firms, proposing tighter assessments and stronger accountability after recent security breaches.

Strengthening Cybersecurity in South Korea's Financial Sector
In response to a recent review that uncovered significant cybersecurity weaknesses at 130 financial institutions, South Korea is taking decisive steps to bolster cybersecurity standards across the sector. Following an earlier investigation that highlighted security breaches at 16 companies, including several cryptocurrency exchanges, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) is set to enforce stricter regulations.
New Initiatives and Regulations
The FSC has announced plans to enhance threat detection strategies, increase the frequency of security evaluations, and establish greater accountability measures for top executives of financial firms. This initiative comes in light of findings that approximately 100,000 instances of customer data, such as names, contact information, and identification details, were compromised across the institutions involved.
Among the firms identified as vulnerable are Streami, operating the Gopax cryptocurrency exchange, and Prabang, both of which reported that a cyberattack on October 2 resulted in the leakage of sensitive customer data.
Proposed Changes and Future Plans
As part of the proposed changes, larger financial entities are expected to undergo cybersecurity vulnerability assessments at least biannually. The FSC is also planning to improve systems for sharing cybersecurity information and is exploring the potential adoption of artificial intelligence to enhance security monitoring for smaller organizations.
Moreover, the commission is contemplating the introduction of supplementary cybersecurity inspections that could occur outside the standard assessment timeline should urgent threats materialize, aiming to curb the risk of future attacks. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the previous incidents were connected in any way or involved the use of AI technologies.
Broader Crackdown on Cyber Threats
These developments come amidst South Korea's broader crackdown on cyber threats, including efforts to prohibit access to 27 crypto-related websites such as KuCoin and MEXC. With these proactive measures, South Korea is seeking to fortify its financial sector against the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks, particularly in the rapidly evolving landscape of cryptocurrency.
