Increasing Fraudulent Phone Calls in France

In France, a troubling trend has emerged as Owen Simonin, also known as Hasheur, highlights an alarming increase in fraudulent phone calls masquerading as customer service outreach from various cryptocurrency exchanges. This spike is believed to be directly linked to recent data breaches that have compromised the personal information of numerous crypto users across the country.

Scammers Posing as Legitimate Representatives

Simonin, who is the CEO and founder of Meria— a French cryptocurrency platform— took to social media to share his concerns regarding these deceptive tactics. He noted that scammers are now posing as representatives from recognized exchanges, including Binance and his own company, Meria. He has personally encountered reports of these fraudulent calls, which leverage the anxious situation many crypto users find themselves in after the data leaks.

Exacerbating Factors and Scam Tactics

The issue is exacerbated by a growing pattern of data leaks affecting both private companies and public institutions. According to Simonin, these breaches are facilitating the identification of crypto holders and their associated platforms by the individuals orchestrating these scams. He elaborated on the tactics employed by these criminals, who typically inform victims that their investments are at risk, creating a false sense of urgency that pressures individuals into transferring their funds hastily to ‘secure’ them.

If you panic and follow through, that’s where your money will go—to their address.

Importance of Skepticism

Simonin highlighted the importance of skepticism when receiving unsolicited communications from crypto services. He stated,

A legitimate company will not reach out to you unexpectedly, especially not for a transaction or to request personal details unless you have initiated contact regarding a specific issue.

Future Risks with AI Technologies

With the anticipated rise of AI technologies, Simonin forecasts that such scams could become even more prevalent as fraudsters will gain access to enhanced capabilities for automating these calls. This comes at a time when France is grappling with a broader rise in cryptocurrency-related crimes, including violent assaults known as ‘wrench attacks’ aimed at directly stealing digital assets.

Recent Data Leak and Cyber Threats

In a related development, the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP), the French tax authority, revealed a data leak in August that exposed the personal information of approximately 678,000 taxpayers. Although cryptocurrency systems use sophisticated mathematical protections, it appears that criminal organizations in France are employing brute force methods rather than technological means to access victims’ assets. The urgency and implications of these scams underscore the critical need for vigilance among cryptocurrency users in the face of rising cyber threats.
