Rise in Violent Kidnappings Linked to Cryptocurrency

The first half of 2026 has witnessed a troubling rise in violent kidnappings linked to the cryptocurrency sector, according to a report from blockchain security firm CertiK. In total, there have been 52 incidents categorized as ‘wrench attacks’—a term derived from a popular xkcd comic. These incidents involve criminals using threats, violence, or captivity to force individuals into surrendering their private keys or passwords related to crypto holdings.

Alarming Increase in Incidents and Financial Impact

This notable increase of 33.3% compared to the same timeframe in 2025 is alarming, particularly as the financial implications of these crimes have surged dramatically—from approximately $10.5 million in the first half of 2025 to an astonishing $124.18 million in 2026. This figure encompasses ransom demands and funds taken from victims, as well as assets frozen by law enforcement.

France: The Primary Location for Wrench Attacks

France currently stands as the primary location for these attacks, accounting for 33 incidents of the 52 reported. CertiK highlights several contributing factors to the spike in wrench attacks within the country. France’s vibrant and visible crypto ecosystem—including exchanges, service providers, investors, and numerous industry events—makes it a prime target.

Additionally, incidents of significant data breaches affecting both private and public sectors, such as the recent compromises of France Travail and ANTS, have resulted in greater availability of personal information. This data can be exploited alongside publicly accessible blockchain information to identify and target potential victims.

Organizers and Victims of Kidnappings

Moreover, a February report from SIRASCO, the Judicial Police’s Organized Crime Information, Intelligence, and Strategic Analysis Service, indicates that many of the organizers orchestrating these kidnappings operate from abroad. They engage local recruiters in France to connect with individuals, particularly youths with prior criminal records, who can execute online threats and physical assaults against the victims.

Typically, those affected by these violent abductions are men aged between 20 and 35, often individuals involved in the cryptocurrency space as investors, entrepreneurs, or influencers.
