Launch of CAP Token Trading on Upbit
On August 6, South Korea’s Upbit exchange officially launched trading for the CAP token, allowing transactions in Korean won, Bitcoin, and Tether. The commencement of trading was announced for 14:00 Korea Standard Time, with expectations for deposits and withdrawals to become accessible shortly after the launch, within a two-hour window. This addition follows Bithumb’s initiative to establish CAP trading against the Korean won approximately five weeks earlier.
Market Response and Trading Details
According to data from CoinGecko at the time of the announcement, the CAP token was valued at around $0.02735, reflecting a robust increase of approximately 15.3% over the previous 24 hours, positioning its market capitalization near $42.5 million. Initial trading activity surged in response to Upbit’s listing, although it remains unclear how much of this uptick can be directly attributed to the new trading environment.
In light of the launch, Upbit specified that CAP deposits and withdrawals would exclusively be facilitated through the Ethereum blockchain, pinpointing the supported contract address as 0x99991c6aabba5a096f24f250b73580f5179b9999. The exchange issued a warning that any transfers using alternate networks may not receive proper credit.
Trading Controls and Liquidity Concerns
In a precautionary measure during the opening hours, Upbit enforced typical controls implemented with new listings. For the first five minutes post-launch, buy orders were disabled, while sell orders dropping below 10% of the previous day’s closing price faced the same restriction. Additionally, traders were limited to placing only limit orders during the initial two hours.
Should there be insufficient liquidity from deposits, Upbit cautioned that the trading launch might be deferred. At the time of examination, CAP was referenced at 40.69 won prior to close, with adjustments to 39.85 won reported at 10:50 KST, along with reference prices near 0.00000043 BTC and 0.02833 USDT.
Market Structure and Future Implications
The trading environment on Upbit enhances local availability by introducing additional cryptocurrency pairs (BTC and USDT) alongside the direct KRW market for CAP. This structure paves the way for fiat currency buyers while also accommodating existing crypto investors accessing the token through Bitcoin or Tether.
Upbit’s recent token listings have utilized this tripartite market format, with previous examples including OriginTrail in May. Market responses to such listings have been varied, with some tokens experiencing post-listing declines.
Analyzing CAP’s valuation provides further insights: CoinGecko notes a circulating supply of 1.56 billion tokens against an overall total supply capped at 10 billion. Thus, while CAP’s current price suggests a fully diluted market value around $273 million, this figure significantly overshoots its circulating value, implying future token releases could impact market dynamics.
CAP Token Overview and Governance
CAP identifies itself as an innovative credit platform that integrates cUSD, stcUSD, and a marketplace catering to borrowers, underwriters, and liquidators. Their framework allows users to mint cUSD against verified assets while staking it for stcUSD to earn rewards. Borrowers are required to secure collateral before tapping into reserve assets; failure to maintain adequate backing could prompt liquidators to sell off collateral to restore reserves.
As the governance token of the protocol, CAP carries responsibilities regarding protocol guidelines, collateral management, and onboarding processes. Notably, 46.72% of the total token supply is allocated for ecosystem advancement, with distribution also designated for community offerings and investor shares.
Future Outlook and Trading Considerations
The critical test ahead lies in whether Upbit’s expanded market offerings will retain genuine liquidity after the initial trading constraints are lifted. Previous experience shows the volatility of early reactions where lower circulating supply can precipitate rapid shifts in price. Additionally, users must adhere to Upbit’s rigorous deposit protocols; transfers from unverified virtual asset service providers may face complications or lengthy processing times, while large transfers could necessitate additional verification about their origins.
Currently, CAP remains actively traded on Bithumb, Coinbase, Bybit, and various international platforms, compelling investors to monitor trading volumes in the Korean market, discrepancies in pricing between domestic and global exchanges, and any forthcoming announcements from Upbit. CoinGecko highlighted Bithumb as the leading market for CAP at the time of analysis.
