Broadridge Financial Solutions Launches Digital Asset Platform

Broadridge Financial Solutions has taken a significant step by introducing its digital asset platform in the United States, enabling wealth management firms to integrate cryptocurrencies and tokenized securities within their traditional investment systems. This was officially announced on September 14, 2023, highlighting that U.S. broker-dealers, registered investment advisers, and other wealth managers can leverage the platform for various operations, including trading, custody, servicing, governance, and client reporting. Notably, Anchorage Digital and Galaxy Digital have been named as the initial infrastructure partners aiding this U.S. implementation.

Streamlining Operations with Digital Assets

The digital asset platform seeks to enable firms to manage cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets without needing separate recordkeeping systems, thus simplifying operational processes. Clients can either connect this new service to their existing systems or utilize third-party recordkeeping solutions, ensuring the sustainability of downstream activities like tax reporting and regulatory compliance. Moreover, the platform permits digital assets to coexist alongside traditional investments in both advisor-led and self-directed accounts, accommodating a diverse range of instruments such as tokenized equities, investment funds, and unique alternative assets.

Tom Carey, who oversees global product and technology at Broadridge, remarked on the growing significance of digital assets in the wealth management sector, suggesting that they are increasingly moving away from the fringes.

While this comment reflects Broadridge’s perception of customer interest, it does not present a definitive measure of market adoption.

Expansion and Partnerships

This U.S. expansion comes after the successful launch of Broadridge’s advanced wealth infrastructure in Canada in April, which similarly included features for crypto, tokenized assets, and integration with custodians and exchanges—all within a single wealth management framework. For the initial U.S. partnership, Anchorage Digital will provide custody and settlement capabilities, ensuring robust security and regulatory compliance appropriate for institutional use. Anchorage Digital is recognized as a federally regulated national trust bank, reflecting its established standing in the financial landscape.

Galaxy Digital adds its own suite of asset market infrastructure and liquidity services to the Broadridge ecosystem. The two companies previously collaborated on tokenized securities prior to the announcement regarding the wealth platform, indicating a well-established partnership that aims to enhance market efficiencies.

DLX Infrastructure Platform

Furthermore, Broadridge unveiled its DLX infrastructure platform on September 9, just prior to the United States expansion announcement. This platform is crafted to bridge the gap between traditional finance and blockchain markets, supporting a wide range of functions from issuance to settlement and providing 24/7 transaction capabilities across multiple blockchain networks.

Broadridge’s DLX infrastructure integrates flexibility within existing advisory frameworks, allowing for access to tokenized equities, funds, and various financial assets. The potential for connecting with established services like DTCC’s Tokenization Service is part of an evolving landscape aimed at mainstreaming digital assets within conventional brokerage frameworks.

Future Outlook

Despite not naming specific U.S. wealth firms currently utilizing its new services, Broadridge anticipates that its partner ecosystem will broaden to include more players as firms seek innovative solutions for custody, liquidity, and regulatory compliance. A recent survey conducted by Broadridge indicated that a substantial majority of financial services leaders in the U.S. and Canada view tokenization as strategically crucial, with a significant portion intending to merge these capabilities with their existing frameworks.

Overall, Broadridge continues to cement its role at the intersection of traditional finance and digital innovation, underscoring the growing integration of blockchain technologies in mainstream financial services.
