Significant Update in Cryptocurrency Security

A significant update has emerged from the realm of cryptocurrency security, as Jameson Lopp, a prominent figure in the Bitcoin community and co-founder of Casa, announced a dramatic increase in his archive documenting physical attacks against cryptocurrency holders. Following a thorough investigation enhanced by the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI), researcher Pizza Bitcoiner has diligently uncovered over 300 previously undocumented incidents, pushing the total count of recorded attacks beyond 700.

New Findings and Concerns

In a post shared on X on October 16, 2026, Lopp expressed both appreciation for Pizza Bitcoiner’s efforts and concern over the unsettling nature of the findings. He noted,

“The Bitcoin Wrench Attack archive just got a lot more accurate. Unfortunately, this reflects a doubling of the known attacks to more than 700.”

This extensive archive now includes approximately 702 entries dating back to 2014, revealing a troubling trend of kidnappings, violent robberies, home invasions, and extortion tactics—which are colloquially referred to as “wrench attacks.” This term takes its origins from a comic strip by XKCD, highlighting how criminals can exploit physical intimidation instead of relying solely on digital hacking techniques.

Data Compilation and Analysis

According to the latest data compiled by Pizza Bitcoiner, which covers incidents from January 2020 to mid-October 2026 across 72 countries, a staggering 670 verified cases were identified; notably, 375 of these were previously absent from Lopp’s archive. In a collaborative effort, Lopp’s repository has now integrated around 351 of these cases.

Employing AI to sift through local-language news reports, court documents, and police records, Pizza Bitcoiner’s research has unveiled crimes that standard investigative methods failed to capture. Responding to the findings, the researcher expressed gratitude to Lopp, stating,

“I’m honored to assist in keeping the archive current. My system will regularly add new incidents and update existing entries with fresh evidence.”

Implications for Cryptocurrency Owners

The enhanced dataset raises alarms regarding the physical safety associated with cryptocurrency ownership. The aggregated data indicates that out of 670 documented cases, 413 involved victims being forcibly restrained, 300 incidents resulted in physical injuries, and 31 tragically led to fatalities. Financial repercussions associated with reported cases totaled an eye-watering $394 million across 447 instances where figures are known.

Annual tallies of these attacks have seen a worrying escalation, growing from 37 incidents in 2020 to 165 in 2025, with an additional 134 documented from the start of 2026 until mid-October. Interestingly, France has emerged as a notable hotspot for such attacks, with the United States following suit.

Expert Insights and Security Measures

However, experts caution that while the numbers indicate a rise in documentation, this does not necessarily correlate to an equivalent increase in the frequency of attacks. The improvement of search methodologies and broader language inclusivity have likely contributed to the uptick in cases found, highlighting a growing awareness rather than an outbreak of new incidents.

Lopp emphasizes that while security measures such as multisignature wallets and delay mechanisms can complicate forced transactions, they cannot entirely prevent physical threats. Additionally, the exposure of cryptocurrency holdings through public disclosures, compromised personal data, and direct transactions can leave individuals vulnerable to targeting.

It is important to recognize that existing archives do not claim to capture every incident, as many attacks remain unreported or fail to penetrate public databases. The unsettling reality isn’t an emergence of new attacks; rather, it points to a backlog of incidents that have occurred without the public’s awareness.

Increased Security Measures by Exchanges

Amidst these revelations, exchanges like Binance are stepping up their security measures, introducing features like ‘Withdraw Protection’, enabling users to restrict outgoing transfers from their accounts as a precautionary measure against theft and coercive threats.
