Significant Arrest in Thailand
In a significant operation, Thai immigration authorities apprehended a 37-year-old man from China named Wu, who is linked to a large-scale money laundering network facilitating transactions exceeding 500 million yuan. The arrest took place in a high-end residential area of Bangkok’s Saphan Sung district.
Details of the Arrest
On October 16, officers detained Wu based on a warrant from Chinese law enforcement, which accused him of participating in a loan-sharking gang. In Thailand, he additionally faced charges for overstaying his visa, having remained in the country illegally for over three years.
Role in the Criminal Scheme
Authorities revealed that his role in the criminal scheme involved recruiting individuals to open bank accounts which were then utilized by money laundering entities. Wu was reportedly responsible for gathering bank details and cards from these recruits, aiding a network that blended the use of traditional currency exchanges with cryptocurrency transactions. While the exact breakdown of the network’s transactions has not been disclosed, the total volume was said to involve substantial sums beyond merely cryptocurrency exchanges.
Investigation and Evidence
Thai police utilized international intelligence to pinpoint Wu’s location at a property in Ramkhamhaeng. During their investigation, they discovered evidence suggesting he had attempted to obscure his identity by using counterfeit documentation for his residence registration. Furthermore, he allegedly modified his vehicle’s registration and changed its appearance to evade detection.
Coordination with Chinese Officials
According to local media accounts, Thai police plan to coordinate with Chinese officials for Wu’s deportation, as he faces serious allegations in both countries. Immigration officers charged him under the Immigration Act of 1979, specifically for his considerable delay in leaving Thailand, while his original warrant from China pertains to serious financial offenses.
Ongoing Crackdown on Financial Crimes
This incident adds to a growing list of recent operations by Thai authorities targeting financial crimes associated with cryptocurrencies. In a separate case from August 2025, police arrested a South Korean individual connected to a crypto-to-gold laundering scheme involving transactions worth over $50 million. As part of their ongoing crackdown, Thai law enforcement continues to investigate individuals linked to money laundering operations, emphasizing their commitment to rooting out illegal activities surrounding digital currencies.
