Operation in Istanbul

In a significant operation in Istanbul, Turkish law enforcement apprehended Richard James Schueler, famously known as Richard Heart, along with four others, uncovering a remarkable array of cash and luxury items. The operation, carried out on October 14 in the Beşiktaş district, led to the seizure of approximately $7.15 million in U.S. currency, six cryptocurrency wallets, and a plethora of designer goods. Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek disclosed this information on Saturday, October 17, marking the first detailed confirmation of the arrests, surpassing earlier reports from local media.

Background on Richard Heart

Schueler, an entrepreneur associated with the cryptocurrency projects HEX, Pulsechain, and Pulsex, is a U.S. citizen who allegedly faces an INTERPOL red notice related to a $1 billion crypto fraud case spanning the United States and Finland. Alongside him, his wife and three individuals identified as his bodyguards were also detained. A coordinated effort involving Turkish police and the National Intelligence Organization led to searches of 15 different locations in Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, and Sarıyer.

Seized Items

The extensive haul includes an impressive inventory: 300 bags, 100 pairs of shoes, 136 pairs of sunglasses, 28 watches, 97 pieces of jewelry, and numerous high-end electronics such as 29 mobile phones, 12 laptops, and several additional tech devices, alongside seven firearms and 1,400 rounds of ammunition. This luxury collection was likened to an extravagant shopping list by authorities, highlighting the scale of the operation.

Judicial Proceedings and Concerns

Gürlek emphasized that judicial processes concerning the detained individuals and examination of the confiscated items are currently underway. Supporters of Heart have expressed concerns about the fairness of his detention in Turkey, arguing that he would have a better chance of a fair trial in the United States.

Legal Issues Beyond Turkey

The legal woes for Schueler expand beyond Turkey, as Finnish authorities have initiated an investigation into allegations of aggravated tax fraud involving substantial sums. Additionally, there is an unidentified claim concerning an assault involving a minor, although neither accusation has led to a conviction, and the INTERPOL notice does not serve as an international warrant for arrest.

Previous Encounters with Authorities

In a previous encounter with U.S. authorities, Schueler successfully defended against claims by the SEC regarding unregistered crypto offerings, with a federal judge dismissing the case in February 2025 for lack of jurisdiction.

Extradition and Future Implications

On the matter of extradition, there has been no official request filed yet, and the particulars and potential value of the seized cryptocurrency wallets remain unclear.

“We will not tolerate the view of Turkey as a refuge for those seeking to evade justice,”

Gürlek asserted, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to combatting international crime and maintaining security. The fate of the five individuals still in custody remains uncertain amidst ongoing judicial proceedings.
